Laser Spectroscopy of Metastable Extreme-Ultraviolet Levels in Lithium Atoms and Ions

Abstract

An experiment is reported in which an intense laser is used to cause the intercombination transfer of metastable $1s2s2p^{4}P_{\frac{5}{2}}$ atoms to the $1s2{p}^{2}^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ level with subsequent radiation in the extreme ultraviolet, thereby providing the first direct tie between the quartet and doublet manifolds in neutral Li. Intercombination transfer between the triplet and singlet manifolds of ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ and tunable anti-Stokes radiation centered near 199 \AA{} are also described.

Radiative lifetime of metastable 2S13 Li+

Randall D. Knight, Michael H. Prior

The radiative lifetime of $1s2s^{3}S_{1}$ ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ ions has been measured by a comparison of the count rate of spontaneous decay photons (210 \AA{}) to a laser-induced fluorescence signal proportional to the total number of metastable ions. The ions were confined in a rf-quadrupole trap, and the fluorescence signal used was the intercombination transition $1s2p^{3}P_{1}$ to $1{s}^{2}^{1}S_{0}$ at 202 \AA{}. The $^{3}P_{1}$ state was populated from $^{3}S_{1}$ by absorption of laser photons at 5485 \AA{}. The result is ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{r}=58.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}12.9$ sec (95% confidence level); theory predicts ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{r}=49.1$ sec.

Observations of stimulated anti-Stokes radiation in barium vapour

John L. Carlsten, Thomas J. Mcilrath

Stimulated anti-Stokes emission at 457.6 nm accompanying the transition from the 3 D 2 metastable to the 1 S 0 ground state in barium has been observed when the output of a dye laser is tuned close to the intercombination line at 791.1 nm. The emission is interpreted as parametric four-wave coupling. Scattering at other frequencies is also observed and the possibility of using this process to produce tunable ultraviolet light is briefly discussed.

Quasiresonant Excitation of Lithium 2p–4d and 2p–4s Transitions in Li-Cd Vapor Mixture

Slobodan Milošević, Davorka Azinović, Irena Labazan +1 more

We performed quasiresonant laser excitation of Li–Cd vapor mixtures at 460.3 nm (2p–4d) and 497.2 nm (2p–4s). The initial population of the Li(2p) level is caused by three processes: collisional dissociation or photodissociation of the Li 2 (B 1 Π u ) molecules or energy transfer in Li 2 (B 1 Π u ) and Li(2s) collisions. The Li(4d,4s) atoms radiatively decay towards Li(3p), from which collisional population transfer to Cd(5 3 P J ) occurs, followed by three-body reactive collisions which produce the LiCd(2 2 Π ) excimer states

Formation of molecular ion LiHe+by radiative association of metastable helium He(23P) with lithium ions

Martina Zámečníková, Lucie D. Augustovičová, Wolfgang P Kraemer +1 more

Radiative association of metastable helium He(2 3 P) with lithium ions is theoretically investigated on the triplet-sigma manifold. Cross-sections and the corresponding rate coefficients for spontaneous and stimulated processes are calculated. Results are compared to other radiative and non-radiative processes in collisions of metastable helium with lithium ions.

Non-Linear Mixing

We report investigations with tunable VUV radiation, employing VUV generation in regions down to the cut-off wavelength of lithium fluorid crystal (~ 110 nm) by frequency tripling of tunable UV from dye laser. -Experiments on multiphoton excitation and ionization of atomic hydrogen with tunable VUV light at Lyman-α, have been carried out with the following objectives: (1) sensitive H and D atom detection by two-photon ionization i. e. 1s ω Lyα → 2 p ω uv → ion , (2) two-photon ionization of H with high resolution at Lyman-α to resolve the hyperfine groundstate doublet, aiming at the production of polarized protons, (3) state selective production of high Rydberg states ( 1 s ω Lyα → 2p ω uv → ns, nd ) , and their ionization, (4) Doppler line shape spectroscopy at Lyman-α applied to recoil energy and momentum distribution measurements of H and D atoms in dissociation processes. -Depending on the objective, different experimental conditions and systems have been employed, for instance atomic beam configuration, mass-spectroscopic ion detection, field ionization in cryogenetic environment, and for Doppler measurements laser induced fluorescence.

Two-photon ionisation of metastable helium: complex structure in the 2S-3P resonance profiles

Hellmut Haberland, Michael Oschwald

The wavelength dependence of resonant two-photon ionisation of metastable He (21S) and He(23S) via the 3P intermediate level is reported. In both the singlet and triplet systems an additional complex, but reproducible, structure is seen in the resonance profile of the ion signal. This occurs for moderate laser intensities (<1 GW cm-2) strong enough to saturate the resonant transition. The physical reason for the structure is not understood, but measurements point to a delicate dependence on the time development of the atomic states and the laser pulse.
