Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in multipolar systems

Abstract

Using analytical and discretized Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization-group methods it is shown that similar to the standard XY model the two-component uniform multipolar systems undergo a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two dimensions. The critical behavior of the multipole-multipole correlation function is governed by a set of critical exponents that depend on the rank t of multipole moments. At the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition they become universal for all systems. An exactly renormalizable multipolar model is introduced. The behavior of this model on fractal and hierarchical lattices is studied. The T=0 scaling exponent of the two-component multipolar systems on a Sierpinski carpet is shown to be negative, so no Kosterlitz-Thouless transition can be expected to take place in this case.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions in two-dimensional non-Abelian spin models

Oleg Borisenko, V. Chelnokov, Francesca Cuteri +1 more

It is argued that two-dimensional U(N) spin models for any N undergo a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT)-like phase transition, similarly to the famous XY model. This conclusion follows from the Berezinskii-like calculation of the two-point correlation function in U(N) models, approximate renormalization group analysis, and numerical investigations of the U(2) model. It is shown, via Monte Carlo simulations, that the universality class of the U(2) model coincides with that of the XY model. Moreover, preliminary numerical results point out that two-dimensional SU(N) spin models with the fundamental and adjoint terms and N>4 exhibit two phase transitions of BKT type, similarly to Z(N) vector models.

Renormalization-group flow and asymptotic behaviors at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions

Andrea Pelissetto C, Ettore Vicari

We investigate the general features of the renormalization-group flow at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, providing a thorough quantitative description of the asymptotc critical behavior, including the multiplicative and subleading logarithmic corrections. For this purpose, we consider the RG flow of the sine-Gordon model around the renormalizable point which describes the BKT transition. We reduce the corresponding $\ensuremath{\beta}$ functions to a universal canonical form, valid to all perturbative orders. Then we determine the asymptotic solutions of the RG equations in various critical regimes: the infinite-volume critical behavior in the disordered phase, the finite-size scaling limit for homogeneous systems of finite size, and the trap-size scaling limit occurring in two-dimensional bosonic particle systems trapped by an external space-dependent potential.

Dynamical scaling analysis of phase transition and critical properties for the RP2 model in two dimensions

Yukiyasu Ozeki, Atsuyuki Matsuda, Yuki Echinaka

The phase transition and critical properties for the RP^{2} model in two dimensions is investigated by means of the nonequilibrium relaxation method (NER) together with the dynamical scaling analysis. The relaxation of nematic order from the all-aligned state is observed by Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison of types of the asymptotic form of the relaxation time around the transition point is considered by the dynamical scaling analysis, which clearly discriminates the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT)-type transition from the second-order one. Using the relaxation of fluctuation, the static critical exponent η and the dynamical one z, which are only the intrinsic exponents for the KT transition, are estimated at and below the KT transition temperature. The result shows similar behaviors with those observed in the KT phase for the ferromagnetic XY model in two dimensions, which has been recognized as a typical KT system, and reveals the confirmation of the present KT transition.

Critical behavior of two-dimensional fully frustrated XY systems

Martin Hasenbusch, Andrea Pelissetto, Ettore Vicari

We study the phase diagram of the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model (FFXY) and of two related models, a lattice discretization of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian for the critical modes of the FFXY model, and a coupled Ising-XY model. We present Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices L × L , L ≲ 10 3 . We show that the low-temperature phase of these models is controlled by the same line of Gaussian fixed points as in the standard XY model. We find that, if a model undergoes a unique transition by varying temperature, then the transition is of first order. In the opposite case we observe two very close transitions: a transition associated with the spin degrees of freedom and, as temperature increases, a transition where chiral modes become critical. If they are continuous, they belong to the Kosterlitz-Thouless and to the Ising universality class, respectively. Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior is observed only after a preasymptotic regime, which is universal to some extent. In the chiral case, the approach is nonmonotonic for most observables, and there is a wide region in which finite-size scaling is controlled by an effective exponent ν eff ≈ 0.8. This explains the result ν ≈ 0.8 of many previous studies using smaller lattices.

Correlation entropy and the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition

Xiaoling Cui, Shi-Jian Gu, Junpeng Cao +2 more

A relation between the correlation entropy and the correlation functions for the general spin-1/2 systems is obtained. It is shown that the correlation entropy catches some characters of correlation behavior and can be used to quantify the quantum and finite-temperature phase transitions, including the infinite order or topological ones. As an example, the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition in the quantum two-dimensional XY model is investigated. The critical temperature and the critical exponents are determined from the finite-size scaling analysis of the correlation entropy.

Monte Carlo Study of a Triangular Ising Lattice. II. Occurrence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Like Phase Transition

Hajime Takayama, Kazuyuki Matsumoto, Hideaki Kawahara +1 more

A two-dimensional triangular Ising lattice with the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction J 1 and the next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction - J 2 is studied by the Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that the system with a finite J 2 undergoes the successive phase transition, paramagnetic→Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT)-like→ferrimagnetic phases, as temperature decreases. The sub-lattice switching phenomenon observed in our previous work is shown to be an intrinsic property inherent to the present system which has an XY character. The marginal exponent of the order-parameter correlation function at the KT-like transition point is seen to increase from 1/4 as the ratio J 2 / J 1 decreases, namely, it reveals a deviation from the universal behavior of a genuine XY model.
