Galilei covariance and quasi-free representations of Fermi fields

Abstract

Some quasi-free irreducible representations of the CAR algebra of a non-relativistic free Fermi field are constructed, which are covariant under certain subgroups of the extended Galilei group. The construction of fully covariant (but reducible) representations as direct integrals of partially covariant ones is described. This method is also applicable to arbitrary C*-algebras and other covariance groups.

Path-integral quantization of Galilean Fermi fields 1

M. de Montigny, F. C. Khanna, Fuad M. Saradzhev

The Galilei-covariant fermionic field theories are quantized by using the path-integral method and five-dimensional Lorentz-like covariant expressions of non-relativistic field equations. Firstly we review the five-dimensional approach to the Galilean Dirac equation, which leads to the Lévy-Leblond equations, and define the Galilean generating functional and Green’s functions for positive- and negative-energy/mass solutions. Then, as an example of interactions, we consider the quartic self-interacting potential λ(ΨΨ) 2, and we derive expressions for the 2- and 4-point Green’s functions. Our results are compatible with those found in the literature on non-relativistic many-body systems. The extended manifold allows for compact expressions of the contributions in (3 + 1) space-time. This is particularly apparent when we represent the results with diagrams in the extended (4 + 1) manifold, since they usually encompass more diagrams in Galilean (3 + 1) space-time. 1

Galilean Covariance and the Schrödinger Equation

M. Omote, S. Kamefuchi, Yasushi Takahashi +1 more

Galilei transformations are formulated in a 5-dimensional form and on such basis the non-relativistic quantum mechanics is reconstructed. Our approach has the following advantages over others'. (1) The Schrödinger wavefunctions are taken to be vector (not projective) representations of the Galilei group, so that (2) the problem here is considerably simplified. (3) The formulation proceeds in a way quite parallel to that of relativistic quantum mechanics, and what is most important, (4) Galilei covariance is manifest throughout.

Galilean wavelets: Coherent states of the affine Galilei group

Jean-Pierre Antoine, I. Mahara

We derive Galilean wavelets, by which we mean coherent states of the affine Galilei group, that is, the Galilei group extended by independent space and time dilations. The construction follows a general method based on square integrable group representations, possibly modulo a subgroup, i.e., on a homogeneous space of the underlying group. We also examine the restriction to the Schrödinger subgroup, which contains only dilations that leave invariant the Schrödinger and the heat equations.

Central extensions and realizations of one-dimensional Galilean systems and quantization

Miguel A. Martín, M. A. del Olmo

The unitary irreducible realizations (representations up to a factor) of the maximal non-trivial central extension of the (1 + 1) Galilei group, (1 + 1), are obtained via the linear unitary irreducible representations of its maximal non-trivial central extension, (1 + 1). As an application we construct the Stratonovich - Weyl correspondence, which allows Moyal quantization of classical systems, for two cases of great physical interest: a system in a external variable force field and a variable-mass system.

Algebraic quantum kinematics: Galilean covariance with positive energy confines unequal-time commutation to null sets

Leonardo A. Pachon

We ask which kinematical groups allow local algebras of canonical quantum fields to commute at unequal times. The Galilei group acts transitively on pairs of non-simultaneous events with a given time separation, so a Galilean-invariant commutation relation between sharp-time algebras at unequal times also holds at coincident positions; at arbitrarily short separations it contradicts the canonical commutation relations, with no spectral assumption. Under unitary Bargmann covariance and positivity of the energy modulo the central mass, the vacuum is annihilated by the annihilation fields, hence not separating for local algebras, and the vacuum two-point function of a canonical field factorises into the free Schrödinger propagator and the characteristic function of an internal-energy distribution. Sharp-time algebras at unequal times then commute only at a closed null set of time separations, bounded below by the Mandelstam-Tamm and Margolus-Levitin times and empty for sharp or generic internal energy; any finite set of separations occurs. Algebras of open spacetime regions containing time-smeared fields never commute. Positivity cannot be dropped: without it, commutation can hold at all separations beyond any given one. Among spatially isotropic homogeneous spacetimes with absolute time, only the galilean ones are transitive at fixed time separation, up to discrete exceptions in the two oscillating cases, realised by a harmonic trap in the Newton-Hooke one. Non-commutation transfers from the vacuum to every representation of a simple C*-algebra on which the dynamics acts by automorphisms, including free Bose and Fermi gases at all temperatures and the Galilei-covariant cutoff dynamics of interacting fermions of Narnhofer and Thirring; without such a vacuum representation it can fail even in thermal equilibrium.

Screen observables in relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum mechanics

Reinhard F. Werner

Screen observables, which measure the arrival coordinates of free particles at a hyperplane containing a timelike direction, are defined by a covariance property with respect to an irreducible representation of the Poincaŕe or Galilei group. For each representation with m>0 the set of screen observables is constructed explicitly and a unique ideal screen observable of greatest intrinsic accuracy is singled out.
