Linear and nonlinear light propagations in a Doppler-broadened medium via electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

We present a systematic theoretical study to deal with linear and nonlinear light propagations in a Doppler-broadened three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), with incoherent population exchange between two lower energy levels taken into account. Through a careful analysis of base state and linear excitation, we show that the EIT condition of the system is given by $|{\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{c}|{}^{2}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{31}\ensuremath{\gg}2{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{21}\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}^{2}$, where ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{c}$ is half the Rabi frequency of the control field, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$ is the Doppler width, and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathit{jl}}$ is the decay rate of the coherence between states $|j\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and $|l\ensuremath{\rangle}$. Under this condition, the effect of incoherent population exchange is insignificant, while dephasing dominates the decoherence of the system. This condition also ensures the validity of the weak nonlinear perturbation theory used in this work for solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations with inhomogeneous broadening. We then investigate the nonlinear propagation of the probe field and show that it is possible to form temporal optical solitons in the Doppler-broadened medium. Such solitons have ultraslow propagating velocity and can be generated in very low light power. The possibility of realizing ($1+1$)-dimensional and ($2+1$)-dimensional spatial optical solitons in the adiabatic regime of the system is also discussed.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Analytical approach on linear and nonlinear pulse propagations in an open Λ-type molecular system with Doppler broadening

Chaohua Tan, Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We develop a systematic analytical approach on linear and nonlinear pulse propagations in an open Λ-type molecular system with Doppler broadening. In the linear case, using a residue theorem and a spectrum decomposition method, we prove that a crossover from electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to Autler–Townes splitting (ATS) exists for a co-propagating configuration of probe and control fields. However, there is no EIT and hence no EIT–ATS crossover for a counter-propagating configuration. We give various explicit formulas, including probe-field spectrum decomposition, the EIT condition, the width of the EIT transparency window, as well as a comparison with the result of cold molecules. Our analytical result agrees well with the experimental one reported recently by Lazoudis et al (2010 Phys. Rev. A 82 023812). In the nonlinear case, using the method of multiple scales, we derive a nonlinear envelope equation for probe-field propagation. We show that stable ultraslow solitons can be realized in the open molecular system.

Slow and fast light propagation through ladder-type atomic media with degenerate energy levels

Nikola Filipovic, Vladan Pavlovic, Ljiljana Stevanović

We investigate the weak probe pulse propagation through the atomic medium, in the presence of the strong control laser field, under the regime of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). These fields couple to the medium by forming the 3-level ladder configuration. We focus on two distinct cases: closed system, which is a non-degenerate, and open system, where the middle level is 3-fold degenerate, and the additional levels are coupled to the other levels only via spontaneous emission. The spatio-temporal profile of the probe pulse envelope is obtained by using the formalism of Maxwell-Bloch equations with the help of the Fourier transform method. We study the influence of the control field Rabi frequency, the spectral half-width of the initial pulse and decay rates on the propagation of the probe pulse. Several important pulse parameters are also calculated and discussed. It is shown that the group velocity of light can be controlled in such a manner that one can switch from slow to fast light and vice versa when changing the control Rabi frequency and spectral pulse half-width. Moreover, the possibility of replacing the open with an effective closed system is also discussed.

Formation and propagation of ultraslow three-wave-vector optical solitons in a cold seven-level triple- Λ atomic system under Raman excitation

Liu-Gang Si, Wen‐Xing Yang, Xin‐You Lü +2 more

In this article, a theoretical scheme is proposed to investigate the formation and propagation of three-wave coupled vector optical solitons with ultraslow group velocities in a lifetime-broadened seven-state triple-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atomic system under Raman excitation. We show that in the presence of a weak applied magnetic field that removes the degeneracy of the corresponding sublevels of the atomic medium, three continuous-wave control fields with circularly left or right polarized fields induce a quantum interference effect which can largely suppress the absorption of the three low-intensity pulsed fields, that is, the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ (right), the linearly $\ensuremath{\pi}$, and the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{+}$ (left) polarized fields converted from one weak linear-polarized probe field. By means of the standard method of multiple scales, we solve the equations of motion of atomic response and probe-control electromagnetic fields and derive three-coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this scheme. We then demonstrate that because of the nonlinear coupling to one another, the three probe fields can evolve into three-wave temporal, group velocity, and amplitude-matched optical solitons under appropriate conditions, which are produced from the delicate balance of the dispersion effects and the self- and cross-phase modulation effects. This scheme may thus pave the way to generate ultraslow vector optical solitons composed of three field components in a highly resonant atomic medium and result in a substantial impact on this field of nonlinear optics.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and slow light in three-level ladder systems: Effect of velocity-changing and dephasing collisions

M. Anil Kumar, Suneel Pratap Singh

We present a theory of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow light in a Doppler broadened three-level ladder (cascade) system incorporating residual Doppler broadening of two-photon coherence and velocity-changing and dephasing collision effects of a buffer gas. Both regimes of wave-vector mismatch occurring when either the probe frequency is higher than that of the (strong) control field or vice versa are considered. It is found that the velocity-changing collisions in general cause narrowing of EIT resonance linewidths which, in a particular wave-vector mismatch regime, can lead to large transparency and slow light generation at relatively low control field intensities. Large collisional dephasing of two-photon coherence in a ladder system, however, tends to mask these effects. A reduction in group velocity by more than 3 orders of magnitude is predicted in the regime where the probe frequency is lesser than that of the control field and in the absence of collisions.
