Velocity-selective population and quantum collapse-revival phenomena of the atomic motion for a motion-quantized Raman-coupled Jaynes-Cummings model

Abstract

An extension of the standard Raman-coupled Jaynes-Cummings model has been made to include atomic external effects due to quantization of atomic motion. The collapse-and-revival phenomena in population inversion and in atomic motion, the velocity-selective population and their relation for a motion-quantized atom are given on the basis of a fundamental constant characterizing the interaction strength between the field modes and the atomic internal and external states. This study reveals how the initial statistics of atomic momentum affect the atomic internal dynamics and how those of the fields affect the atomic external dynamics through the atomic internal states. An exact expression for the time evolution of the density operator has been given for two fields and the center-of-mass motion initially in coherent states and in an arbitrary superposition of atomic momentum eigenstates. The statistics of atomic external and internal quantities such as the radiation force and the atomic momentum are given. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Motion-quantized Jaynes-Cummings models with an arbitrary intensity-dependent medium

Jiaren Liu, Yuzhu Wang

The exact time dependence of the density operator and various physical quantities for the motion-quantized Jaynes-Cummings models (MQJCMs) is given using the operator transformation under which it is shown that the MQJCMs have the same dynamics as the ordinary JCMs in the Kerr medium. The quantum collapses and revivals of the atomic motion due to the quantum properties of light fields and the quantization of atomic position and momentum, are predicted. The effects of the initial atomic momentum distribution and the arbitrary intensity-dependent medium on the collapse and revival phenomena of the population inversion, atomic momentum and radiation are formulated in detail. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dynamical evolution of the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model in a Kerr-like medium

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The collapse-and-revival phenomenon in the population inversion and the time evolution of the quasiprobability Q function of an atom undergoing a two-photon process are investigated when the cavity is supposed to be filled with a Kerr-like medium. An exact expression for the atomic population inversion has been given for a field initially in the coherent state. The closed form of this expression as well as that of the Q function are obtained under the high-field approximation. Also, the tendency toward inhibited decay of the excited state has been explicitly shown. This study reveals how the simultaneous occurrence of two nonlinear processes affects the atomic dynamics.

Quantum collapse-revival effect in a supersymmetric Jaynes–Cummings model and its possible application in supersymmetric qubits

Shi Yao Chong, Jian Qi Shen

Abstract In the photon-atom interaction, one of the most interesting phenomena can be collapse-revival effect in population inversion of atomic levels. Since a single-photon-transition Jaynes–Cummings model can be generalized to a multiphoton-transition Jaynes–Cummings model, of which the Hamiltonian can exhibit a supersymmetric Lie algebra structure, in this paper, quantum collapse and revival in atomic population inversion, which is a collaborative effect of a variety of quantum Rabi oscillations with various quantum Rabi frequencies, is studied for the supersymmetric multiphoton-transition Jaynes–Cummings model. In the literature, it has been pointed out that quantum collapse and revival might find an application in qubit design. We expect that a supersymmetric two-level system might serve as such a kind of qubits. Compared with ordinary two-level qubits, more information could be stored in the basis vectors of supersymmetric qubits, and this could increase the degrees of freedom of tensor product (multi-component extension) of basis vectors of this multiphoton-atom interacting system. For this reason, some characteristics of the collapse-revival effect driven by ordinary coherent states and Yurke–Stoler coherent states will be addressed in this paper. The influence of various characteristic parameters of this supersymmetric Jaynes–Cummings model and the quantized optical fields on the quantum collapse and revival in the population inversion will be indicated in some numerical illustrative examples.

Collapse and revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings model: An analysis based on the Mollow transformation

P. R. Berman, C. H. Raymond Ooi

Collapse and revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings model are studied within the context of the Mollow transformation for a single-mode coherent-state cavity field. The Mollow-transformed Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian has two atom-field terms, one corresponding to a classical field and the other to a quantized field driving the atomic transition. As such it maps onto the complementary problem of an atom in an optical cavity, whose field is initially in the vacuum state, driven by an external classical field. Both problems have the same atomic-state dynamics. It is shown that the revivals can be associated with two distinct properties of the quantized field of the transformed Hamiltonian. Revivals occurring at even (odd) multiples of the revival time are correlated with field states that are close to the initial field state and for which the average energy in the field is a minimum (maximum). Using semiclassical dressed states, we are able to map the problem for the field states onto one involving two uncoupled oscillators driven by off-resonant fields, provided effects related to dispersion are neglected. Analytic expressions for the photon number distribution of the transformed cavity field, including dispersion, are obtained for the even revival times.

Quantum statistical properties of the Jaynes–Cummings model in the presence of a classical homogeneous gravitational field

M Mohammadi, M. H. Naderi, M. Soltanolkotabi

The temporal evolution of quantum statistical properties of an interacting atom–radiation field system in the presence of a classical homogeneous gravitational field is investigated within the framework of the Jaynes–Cummings model. To analyse the dynamical evolution of the atom–radiation system a quantum treatment of the internal and external dynamics of the atom is presented based on an alternative su(2) dynamical algebraic structure. By solving the Schrödinger equation in the interaction picture, the evolving state of the system is found by which the influence of the gravitational field on the dynamical behaviour of the atom–radiation system is explored. Assuming that initially the radiation field is prepared in a coherent state and the two-level atom is in a coherent superposition of the excited and ground states, the influence of gravity on the collapses and revivals of the atomic population inversion, atomic dipole squeezing, atomic momentum diffusion, photon counting statistics and quadrature squeezing of the radiation field is studied.

Effects of a Moving Mass Centre on Atomic Dynamics in Locally Inhomogeneous Quantized Cavity Field

Xiaoguang Wang, Chang-Pu Sun

By invoking an exactly solvable model as the generalization of the Jaynes-Cummings model, the influence of spatial motion of atomic centre on the dynamics of a single-mode cavity-two-level atom system are studied for various initial conditions. These investigations show that the Doppler effect exercised by the motion of atom in a locally inhomogeneous cavity field can lead to the phenomenon of oscillation collapse and revival in the transition probability and the atomic population inversion.
