Variational calculations for the Sutherland model

Abstract

A system of fermions or bosons interacting in one dimension via a two-body potential of the form $V(r)=\frac{g}{{r}^{2}}$ is known to have a ground state of Jastrow type. The boson system is explored in this paper within the hypernetted-chain scheme to study the various ground-state properties, and the results are compared with the exact results available for this system. The results are expected to have important bearing on spin correlations in the Gutzwiller state.

Variational theory of binary boson mixture at T=0 K

Tapash Chakraborty

We present a general formalism for the ground state of binary boson mixtures where the Jastrow-type ground-state wave function is optimized by solving the Euler-Lagrange equations in the hypernetted-chain scheme. This method is expected to provide more accurate information for the binary boson systems compared to the methods currently available. For the isotopic T\ensuremath{\uparrow}-H\ensuremath{\uparrow} mixture, complete phase separation in its ground state is observed.

Renormalization Group and Exact Solubility in One Dimension: Generalized Sutherland Model

Eugene B. Kolomeisky

We introduce a generalized Sutherland model: a system of one-dimensional fermions or bosons interacting by a two-body potential which has a short-range interaction of finite range and amplitude, and an inverse-square tail. Using renromalization-group arguments we analyze the ground-state and correlation properties of this family of models. We reproduce known exact results as special cases of the general model and point out a correspondence between the exactly solvable problems and special initial or final conditions of the renormalization transformation, which we believe to be a general criterion. This enables us to predict a series of new presumably exact results.

Series Expansion in the Variational Approach to Many-Boson Problems

Deok Kyo Lee

The ground state of a many-boson system is studied within the range of the Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow-type description when the radial distribution function $g(\mathcal{r})$ differs little from its asymptotic value. The treatment of the problem is based on the development of power series in $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1\ensuremath{-}g(0)$ for all physical quantities which depend on the particle density. The $n$-particle distribution functions ${p}^{(n)}$ are evaluated to order ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{4}$ as functionals in the $g(\mathcal{r})$ function for $n=3 \mathrm{and} 4$ using the cluster-expansion procedure outlined by Abe. These results are used in connection with the improvement of the ground-state description when the wave function is not the optimum choice. Using ${p}^{(3)}$ function obtained, the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon equation is solved, also to order ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{4}$, for the two-particle correlation function $\mathcal{U}(\mathcal{r})$, and the first two leading corrections to the hypernetted-chain (HNC) approximation are obtained. The variational calculation along with the series expansion for $\mathcal{U}(\mathcal{r})$ yields formulas for the ground-state properties, including some corrections to known results. For a charged boson gas, numerical values of $\mathcal{U}(\mathcal{r})$, ${p}^{(3)}$, ${p}^{(4)}$, and the ground-state energy are computed using the Gaussian approximation for $g(\mathcal{r})$, and the results show that the errors associated with the HNC approximation are small. A brief discussion is presented on the method of determining the general expansion coefficients of the correlation functions of ${p}^{(n)}$ in terms of $g(\mathcal{r})$.

Ground-state properties of a dilute homogeneous Bose gas of hard disks in two dimensions

Ferran Mazzanti, A. Polls, Adelchi Fabrocini

The energy and structure of a dilute hard-disks Bose gas are studied in the framework of a variational many-body approach based on a Jastrow correlated ground-state wave function. The asymptotic behaviors of the radial distribution function and the one-body density matrix are analyzed after solving the Euler equation obtained by a free minimization of the hypernetted chain energy functional. Our results show important deviations from those of the available low density expansions, already at gas parameter values $x\ensuremath{\sim}0.001$. The condensate fraction in 2D is also computed and found generally lower than the 3D one at the same $x$.

Variational wave functions and ground-state properties in the one-dimensionalt-Jmodel

Hisatoshi Yokoyama, Masao Ogata

Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional t-J model are studied by using exact diagonalization of small systems and compared with those found with Gutzwiller-Jastrow--type variational functions. Near the supersymmetric case (J/t=2), the Gutzwiller wave function is an extremely good trial function for all electron densities. It reproduces momentum distribution and correlation functions of the exact ground state except for critical behaviors. For J/t2 (>2), the ground-state properties are well described by Jastrow functions with repulsive (attractive) intersite correlations.

Quantum Many-Body Problem in One Dimension: Ground State

Bill Sutherland

We investigate the ground state of a system of either fermions or bosons interacting in one dimension by a 2-body potential V(r) = g/r2. In the thermodynamic limit, we determine the ground state energy and pair correlation function.
