Persistent currents from Berry’s phase in mesoscopic systems

Abstract

The quantum orbital motion of electrons in mesoscopic normal-metal rings threaded by a magnetic flux produces striking interference phenomena such as persistent currents due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Similarly, when a quantum spin adiabatically follows a magnetic field that rotates slowly in time, the phase of its state vector acquires an additional contribution known as the Berry phase. We explore the combination of these two quantum phenomena by examining the interplay between orbital and spin degrees of freedom for a charged spin-1/2 particle moving in a mesoscopic ring embedded in a classical, static inhomogeneous magnetic field, i.e, a texture. As a consequence of its orbital motion through the texture, the spin experiences, via the Zeeman interaction, a varying magnetic field. This results in a Berry---or geometric---phase, leading to persistent (i.e., equilibrium) currents of charge and spin. These mesoscopic phenomena are related to (but should be distinguished from) the conventional persistent currents that result from magnetic flux through a ring. We develop a path-integral approach to decouple the orbital and spin motion and, by using an adiabatic approximation, we compute the equilibrium expectation values of the persistent charge and spin currents and the magnetization. We find that the persistent currents depend on the texture in a striking manner through a geometric phase (related to a surface area characterizing the texture) and a geometric vector (related to the projections of this area). In the special case of a cylindrically symmetric texture we use a spectrum obtained by Kuratsuji and Iida to obtain exact results that confirm, independently, the validity of the path-integral approach in the adiabatic limit. We discuss the connection between the geometric vector and quantum-mechanical correlations, and examine quantum fluctuations and the zero-point energy.

Aharonov-Anandan phase and persistent currents in a mesoscopic ring

Xiao-Chun Gao, Tiezheng Qian

The exact solution for a mesoscopic ring in the presence of a classical, static, inhomogeneous magnetic field is found and used to derive the formulas for persistent currents. From the derivation, we can see the close relation of the Aharonov-Anandan phase to the persistent currents. In the adiabatic limit, our results are shown to be identical with those of Loss et al., who explored the connection between the persistent currents and the Berry phase.

Nonadiabatic Phase and Persistent Currents for System of Spin-$\frac12 $ Particles in Presence of Electromagnetic Fields and Spin-Orbit Interaction

Li Nian-Bei, Zhongshui Ma

We present a comprehensive view and details of calculations on Aharonov–Anandan phase for the charged particles in the external electric and magnetic fields for a nonadiabatic process. We derive, with consideration of a spin-orbit interaction and Zeemann Splitting, the persistent currents as a response to an Aharonov–Casher topological interference effect in one-dimensional mesoscopic ring. We also establish a connection to Berry adiabatic phase with deduced dynamical-nature dependence in the nonadiabatic process. The second quantization representation has also been employed in exhibition of persistent currents in the many-body case.

Arbitrary mixture of two charged interacting particles in a magnetic Aharonov–Bohm ring: persistent currents and Berry's phases

K Kyriakou, K Moulopoulos, Areg Ghazaryan +1 more

Aharonov–Bohm physics at the two-particle level is investigated for distinguishable interacting charged particles through the exact solution of a toy model with confined states. The effect of the inaccessible magnetic flux is distributed between the center-of-mass and the internal pair level, and the nontrivial manner in which the two levels mutually affect each other demonstrates the interplay between interactions, the nontrivial topology, the Aharonov–Bohm flux and the characteristics of a charged quantal mixture. Analytical expressions for energy spectra, wavefunctions, (flux-dependent) critical interactions for binding and current densities are derived, and these offer the rare possibility of studying persistent currents from the point of view of an interacting nanoscopic system. Two cyclic adiabatic processes are identified, one coupled to the center-of-mass behavior and the other defined on the two-body interaction potential, with the associated Berry's phases also analytically determined; these are found to be directly linked to the electric and probability (persistent) currents in nontrivial ways that are shown to be universal (independent of the actual form of the interaction). The direct connection of the two-body Berry's phase to the electric current for a neutral system is found to disappear in the case of identical particles—hence revealing the character of a charged mixture as being crucial for exhibiting this universal behavior.

Persistent currents in mesoscopic Hubbard rings with spin-orbit interaction

Satoshi Fujimoto, Norio Kawakami

The effect of spin-orbit interaction on persistent currents in mesoscopic Hubbard rings threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux is investigated, with attention focused on orbital magnetism. The nonperturbative treatment of the spin-orbit interaction developed by Meir et al. is combined with the Bethe ansatz solution in order to deal with this problem exactly. We find that the interplay of spin-orbit interaction and electron-electron interaction plays a crucial role, bringing about some remarkable effects on orbital magnetism.

Quantum Interference of Electrons in a Ring: Tuning of the Geometrical Phase

Rosario Capozza, Domenico Giuliano, Procolo Lucignano +1 more

We calculate the oscillations of the dc conductance across a mesoscopic ring, simultaneously tuned by applied magnetic and electric fields orthogonal to the ring. The oscillations depend on the Aharonov-Bohm flux and of the spin-orbit coupling. They result from mixing of the dynamical phase, including the Zeeman spin splitting, and of geometric phases. By changing the applied fields, the geometric phase contribution to the conductance oscillations can be tuned from the adiabatic (Berry) to the nonadiabatic (Ahronov-Anandan) regime. To model a realistic device, we also include nonzero backscattering at the connection between ring and contacts, and a random phase for electron wave function, accounting for dephasing effects.
