Relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

We show that two independent Bose-Einstein condensates, each initially containing a well-defined number of atoms, will appear coherent in an experiment that measures the beat note between these condensates. We investigate the role played by atomic interactions within each condensate in the time evolution of their relative phase.

Time Evolution for Relative Phase of Two Bose–Einstein Condensates

Yi Xue-Xi, Sun Changpu

Considering the collisions between the two condensates and the tunneling effects, we study the time evolution of the relative phase of two Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). The phase amplitude is given in coherent picture for many cases, which furnishes us a new method to study the interference of two BECs.

Role of the relative phase in the merging of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates

Lukas F. Buchmann, Georgios M. Nikolopoulos, P. Lambropoulos

We study the merging of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary initial phase difference, in the framework of a one-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii model. The role of the initial phase difference in the process is discussed, and various types of phase-sensitive excitations are identified.

Creation of coherence in Bose-Einstein condensates by atom detection

Péter Horák, Barnett, S M

We investigate the creation of a relative phase between two Bose-Einstein condensates, initially in number states, by detection of atoms and show how the system approaches a coherent state. Two very distinct time scales are found: one for the creation of the interference is of the order of the detection time for a few single atoms and another, for the preparation of coherent states, of the order of the detection time for a significant fraction of the total number of atoms. Approximate analytic solutions are derived and compared with exact numerical results.

Measurements of Relative Phase in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

David S. Hall, M. R. Matthews, Carl Wieman +1 more

We have measured the relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates using a time-domain, separated-oscillatory-field condensate interferometer. A single two-photon coupling pulse prepares the double-condensate system with a well-defined relative phase; at a later time, a second pulse reads out the phase difference accumulated between the two condensates. We find that the accumulated phase difference reproduces from realization to realization of the experiment, even after the individual components have separated spatially and their relative center-of-mass motion has damped.
