Abstract

We study the quantum phase transition in the one-dimensional Ising model at zero temperature. As the strength g of the transverse field is changed, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from an ordered to a disordered phase, characterized by spontaneous magnetization in the z-direction. We apply the standard technique of finite-size scaling in statistical mechanics to detect the nature of the quantum phase transition in the system. Quantum phase transitions in the transverse one-dimensional Ising model with four-spin interactions

O. F. de Alcantara Bonfim, J. Florencio

In this work we investigate the quantum phase transitions at zero temperature of the one-dimensional transverse Ising model with an extra term containing four-spin interactions. The competition between the energy couplings of the model leads to an interesting zero-temperature phase diagram. We use a modified Lanczos method to determine the ground state and the first excited state energies of the system, with sizes of up to 20 spins. We apply finite size scaling to the energy gap to obtain the boundary region where ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition takes place. We also find the critical exponent associated with the correlation length. We find a degenerate $⟨3,1⟩$ phase region. The first-order transition boundary between this phase and the paramagnetic phase is determined by analyzing the behavior of the transverse spin susceptibility as the system moves from one region to the other.

First- and second-order quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with boundary fields

Kun Hu, Xintian Wu

The one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with boundary fields is studied analytically and numerically. The phase diagram in the ordered state is obtained. We find that there exist two types of phase transitions. The longitudinal boundary fields applied to the left and right ends of the Ising chain are ${h}_{L}$ and ${h}_{R}$, respectively. For $|{h}_{L}|,|{h}_{R}|<\sqrt{1\ensuremath{-}g}$, where $g$ is the transverse field and ${h}_{L}{h}_{R}<0$, a first-order phase transition occurs with the changing ${h}_{L}$ or ${h}_{R}$. The energy gap and boundary magnetization are solved exactly. The analytical expressions of the finite-size scaling for the first-order phase transition are obtained. For $|{h}_{R}|>\sqrt{1\ensuremath{-}g}$ and ${h}_{L}{h}_{R}<0$, there exists a continuous phase transition with changing ${h}_{L}$ and vice versa. This transition is identified as a quantum wetting transition. The singularity of the boundary magnetization in this phase transition is explicitly shown. A simple computational procedure with high accuracy and efficiency is proposed to calculate the magnetization. The magnetization profile, correlation functions, and wetting layer thickness are studied numerically.

Fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions: finite-size scaling for the quantum Ising model in a transverse field

Huan-Qiang Zhou, Jian-Hui Zhao, Bo Li

We analyze the fidelity per lattice site for two different ground states of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field near the critical point. It is found that, in the thermodynamic limit, the fidelity per lattice site is singular, and the derivative of its logarithmic function with respect to the transverse field strength is logarithmically divergent at the critical point. The scaling behavior is confirmed numerically by performing a finite-size scaling analysis for systems of different sizes, consistent with the conformal invariance at the critical point. This allows us to extract the correlation length critical exponent, which turns out to be universal in the sense that the correlation length critical exponent does not depend on either the anisotropic parameter or the transverse field strength.

Exact results for the criticality of quench dynamics in quantum Ising models

Ying Li, Mingxia Huo, Z. Song

Based on the obtained exact results we systematically study the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 transverse field Ising model with zero- and finite-temperature initial states. We focus on the magnetization of the system after a sudden change of the external field and a coherent time-evolution process. With a zero-temperature initial state, the quench magnetic susceptibility as a function of the initial field strength exhibits strongly similar scaling behaviors to those of the static magnetic susceptibility, and the quench magnetic susceptibility as a function of the final field strength shows a discontinuity at the quantum critical point. This discontinuity remains robust and always occurs at the quantum critical point even for the case of finite-temperature initial systems, which indicates a great advantage of employing quench dynamics to study quantum phase transitions.

Thue-Morse quantum Ising model

Mauro Melchiades Doria, Franco Nori, Indubala I. Satija

We study the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field where the exchange couplings are ordered according to the Thue-Morse (TM) sequence. At zero temperature, this model is equivalent to a two-dimensional classical Ising model in a magnetic field with TM aperiodicity along one direction. We compute the order parameter (magnetization) of the chain and the scaling behavior of the energy spectrum when the system undergoes a phase transition. Analogous to the quasiperiodic (QP) quantum Ising chain, the onset of long-range order is signaled by a nonanaliticity in the exponent \ensuremath{\delta} which describes the scaling of the total bandwidth with the size of the chain. The critical spin-coupling can be computed analytically and it is found to be lower than the QP case. Furthermore, the energy bands are found to be narrower than the corresponding QP chain. The former and latter results are consistent with the fact that the present structure has a degree of ordering intermediate between QP and random.

Properties of the random-field Ising model in a transverse magnetic field

T. Senthil

We consider the effect of a random longitudinal field on the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. For spatial dimension $d>2$, there is at low strength of randomness and transverse field a phase with true long-range order that is destroyed at higher values of the randomness or transverse field. The properties of the quantum phase transition at zero temperature are controlled by a fixed point with no quantum fluctuations. This fixed point also controls the classical finite-temperature phase transition in this model. Many critical properties of the quantum transition are therefore identical to those of the classical transition. In particular, we argue that the dynamical scaling is activated, i.e., the logarithm of the diverging time scale rises as a power of the diverging length scale.
