Capacity of a channel assisted by two-mode squeezed states

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to derive the capacity of attenuated or amplified noisy quantum channel assisted by two-mode squeezed states. In our previous works, formulas for capacity and reliability function have been obtained for continuous variable communication channel in the case where the classical information is conveyed by unentangled quantum Gaussian states. This paper investigates how two-mode squeezed states can enhance classical communication over quantum Gaussian channel.

The information capacity of entanglement-assisted continuous variable quantum measurement

Alexander Semenovich Holevo, A A Kuznetsova

Abstract The present paper is devoted to the investigation of the entropy reduction and entanglement-assisted classical capacity (information gain) of continuous variable quantum measurements. These quantities are computed explicitly for multimode Gaussian measurement channels. For this we establish a fundamental property of the entropy reduction of a measurement: under a restriction on the second moments of the input state it is maximized by a Gaussian state (providing an analytical expression for the maximum). In the case of one mode, the gain of entanglement assistance is investigated in detail.

Information capacity formula of quantum optical channels

Masaki Sohma, Osamu Hirota

The applications of the general formulae of channel capacity developed in the quantum information theory to evaluation of information transmission capacity of optical channel are interesting subjects. In this review paper, we will point out that the formulation based on only classical-quantum channel mapping model may be inadequate when one takes into account a power constraint for noisy channel. To define the power constraint well, we should explicitly consider how quantum states are conveyed through a transmission channel. Basing on such consideration, we calculate a capacity formula for an attenuated noisy optical channel with genreral Gaussian state input; this gives certain progress beyond the example in our former paper.

Information capacity of continuous variable measurement channel

Alexander Semenovich Holevo, A A Kuznetsova

Abstract The present paper is devoted to investigation of the classical capacity of infinite-dimensional continuous variable quantum measurement channels. A number of usable conditions are introduced that enable us to apply previously obtained general results to specific models, in particular, to the multi-mode bosonic Gaussian measurement channels. An explicit formula for the classical capacity of the Gaussian measurement channel is obtained in this paper without assuming the global gauge symmetry, solely under certain ‘threshold condition’. The result is illustrated by the capacity computation for a one-mode squeezed-noise heterodyne measurement channel.

Classical capacity of quantum non-Gaussian attenuator and amplifier channels

Zacharie Van Herstraeten, Saikat Guha, Nicolas J. Cerf

We consider a quantum bosonic channel that couples the input mode via a beam splitter or two-mode squeezer to an environmental mode that is prepared in an arbitrary state. We investigate the classical capacity of this channel, which we call a non-Gaussian attenuator or amplifier channel. If the environment state is thermal, we of course recover a Gaussian phase-covariant channel whose classical capacity is well known. Otherwise, we derive both a lower and an upper bound to the classical capacity of the channel, drawing inspiration from the classical treatment of the capacity of non-Gaussian additive-noise channels. We show that the lower bound to the capacity is always achievable and give examples where the non-Gaussianity of the channel can be exploited so that the communication rate beats the capacity of the Gaussian-equivalent channel (i.e. the channel where the environment state is replaced by a Gaussian state with the same covariance matrix). Finally, our upper bound leads us to formulate and investigate conjectures on the input state that minimizes the output entropy of non-Gaussian attenuator or amplifier channels. Solving these conjectures would be a main step toward accessing the capacity of a large class of non-Gaussian bosonic channels.

Quantum-Enabled Communication without a Phase Reference

Quntao Zhuang

A phase reference has been a standard requirement in continuous-variable quantum sensing and communication protocols. However, maintaining a phase reference is challenging due to environmental fluctuations, preventing quantum phenomena such as entanglement and coherence from being utilized in many scenarios. We show that quantum communication and entanglement-assisted communication without a phase reference are possible, when a short-time memory effect is present. The degradation in the communication rate of classical or quantum information transmission decreases inversely with the correlation time. Exact solutions of the quantum capacity and entanglement-assisted classical and quantum capacity for pure dephasing channels are derived, where non-Gaussian multipartite-entangled states show strict advantages over usual Gaussian sources. For thermal-loss dephasing channels, lower bounds of the capacities are derived. The lower bounds also extend to scenarios with fading effects in the channel. In addition, for entanglement-assisted communication, the lower bounds can be achieved by a simple phase-encoding scheme on two-mode squeezed vacuum sources, when the noise is large.
