Abstract

We present a model of the line shape of a Doppler-free two-photon transition in a metastable neon beam. This model considers the ac Stark effect, the Gaussian profile of the laser beam, and the depletion, or bleaching, of the metastable state as the atoms cross the laser. The model fit the experimental data well and was recently used to verify the time-dilation effect at an accuracy of a few ppm.

Line-shapes in Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy. The effect of finite transit time

F. Biraben, M. Bassini, Bernard Cagnac

A general formalism is developed with the aim of calculating the line-shapes in two-photon absorption for the case of non monochromatic fields. This formalism is applied to the problem of the finite transit time of the atoms through the Laser beam; and it permits a precise expression to be obtained for the line-shape (convolution of a Lorentzian curve and a double-exponential curve). The comparison is made using experimental profiles.

Asymmetric line shapes for weak transitions in strong standing-wave fields

Carl Wieman, Martin Charles Noecker, Bernard P. Masterson +1 more

We have observed the resonance line shape for a very weak atomic transition excited when an atomic beam intersects a strong standing-wave laser field. The line shape has a dramatic intensity-dependent distortion which is Doppler free and independent of the excitation rate. We have calculated the line shape predicted by optical Bloch equations that include a spatially varying ac Stark shift, and find good agreement with our experimental results.

ac Stark shifts for cesium and their effect on ionization line shapes

Michael Stuart Pindzola, Alan H. Glasser, M. G. Payne

The influence of ac Stark shifts on the three-photon ionization of cesium in a moderate-intensity laser beam is investigated. The ionization process involves a two-photon resonance with the $8d$ fine-structure levels. The work consists of two related parts. In the first part, atomic parameters, such as the two-photon Rabi rate and the ac Stark shift, are calculated in the nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. In the second part, the atomic parameters thus obtained are used as coefficients in a system of coupled differential equations representing the time evolution of the density matrix. Ionization line shapes are generated for a transform-limited pulsed laser of moderate intensity with a single-mode transverse structure. As the time history of the intensity profile is varied from square to smooth, the ionization line shape becomes asymmetric due to the time dependence of the ac Stark shift. The effects of varying the spatial intensity distribution of the laser light to include transverse centering and longitudinal focusing are also studied.

Saturation-spectroscopy transients from Raman coherence between metastable levels

Ch. Lerminiaux, M. Dumont

We present a theoretical and experimental study of the time evolution of the saturation-spectroscopy line shape when the saturating beam is suddenly switched on. We consider two metastable levels coupled by two Doppler-broadened transitions with a common excited level. In this special case, the fast transients from the upper level are rapidly damped, and the slow transients from populations and from Raman coherence in the metastable levels are easy to observe and are used for studying the collisional relaxation. For the sake of clarity, the theoretical analysis is developed according to a perturbation calculation. Nevertheless, saturation of the metastable levels must be taken into account in a more realistic theory (velocity-selective optical pumping): We give only a few results that are in excellent agreement with the experiments performed on neon metastable levels 3P0 and 3P2.

Isotopic shift, pressure shift, and pressure broadening of the 7d′ states of neon using Doppler-free two-photon absorption spectroscopy

M. M. Salour

Doppler-free two-photon transitions between the $3s$, $J=2$ metastable state and the subconfiguration $7{d}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ of neon are studied with a pulsed-dye-laser oscillator-amplifier system which was synchronized with a chopped rf discharge in neon vapor. The isotopic shifts for these transitions are measured, and based on these measurements we have made a systematic study of Ne-Ne and Ne-He collisional broadening and shift of these very narrow Doppler-free two-photon resonances.

Rabi oscillations in the optical pumping of a metastable neon beam with a cw dye laser

J. P. C. Kroon, H. A. J. Senhorst, Herman C. W. Beijerinck +2 more

We report the measurement of Rabi oscillations in the optical pumping of a beam of metastable neon atoms in a three-level system with a cw dye laser. The laser beam is focused on the atomic beam, resulting in an interaction time with the laser beam of the order of the spontaneous lifetime of the induced transition. The Rabi oscillations are measured by a velocity-resolved analysis of the optically pumped metastable atoms. Adiabatic following is observed when the atoms cross the laser beam outside the waist, induced by the Doppler shifts due to the curvature of the wave fronts.
