Efficiency and fidelity of photon-echo quantum memory in an atomic system with longitudinal inhomogeneous broadening

S. A. Moiseev, Арсланов Наркис Мусавирович

We have performed a theoretical analysis of the photon-echo-based quantum memory realized recently in A. L. Alexander et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 043602 (2006) in the medium with linear correlation between atomic spatial coordinates and frequency detunings of the inhomogeneously broadened transition. A more general vision on the physical picture of temporal and spatial light-atoms dynamics has been obtained in the analytical solutions, taking into account the atomic phase relaxation, inhomogeneous broadening, and arbitrary parameters of the probe light pulses. We have evaluated preferable experimental conditions for the storage of incoming data light field modes where quantum memory efficiency and fidelity have been found. Physics of high efficiency in the forward geometry of the quantum memory and advantages for the realization of more universal long-lived storage on this basis are clarified.

Analysis of quantum light memory in atomic systems

Hassan Kaatuzian, Ali Rostami, Ahmad Ajdarzadeh Oskouei

We extend the theory to describe the quantum light memory in type atoms with considering (lower levels coherency decay rate) and detuning for the probe and the control fields. We obtain that with considering these parameters, group velocity of the probe pulse does not tend to zero by turning off the control field. We show that there are considerable decay for the probe pulse and the stored information. Also, it is inferred that the light field does not tend to zero when the control field is turned off. In addition, we obtain that in the off-resonance case there is considerable distortion of the output light pulse (with fast oscillations) that destroys the stored information. Then we present the limitations on detuning (bandwidths) of the probe and the control fields to achieve negligible distortion. We finally present the numerical calculations and compare them with obtained analytical results.

Transverse mode revival of a light-compensated quantum memory

F. Yang, Torsten Mandel, Christian Lutz +2 more

A long-lived quantum memory was developed based on light-compensated cold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a dipole trap. The lifetime of the quantum memory was improved by 40 folds, from 0.67 to 28 ms with the help of a compensation laser beam. Oscillations of the memory efficiency due to the transverse mode breathing of the singly excited spin wave have been clearly observed and clarified with a Monte Carlo simulation procedure. With detailed analysis of the decoherence processes of the spin wave in cold atomic ensembles, this experiment provides a benchmark for the further development of high-quality quantum memories.
