The dispersive properties of an excited-doublet four-level atomic system

Abstract

We have investigated the dispersive properties of excited-doublet four-level atoms interacting with a weak probe field and an intense coupling laser field. We have derived an analytical expression of the dispersion relation for a general excited-doublet four-level atomic system subject to a one-photon detuning. The numerical results demonstrate that for a typical rubidium Dl line configuration, due to the unequal dipole moments for the transitions of each ground state to double excited states, generally there exists no exact dark state in the system. Close to the two-photon resonance, the probe light can be absorbed or gained and propagate in the so-called superluminal form. This system may be used as an optical switch.

Group velocity control in a four level system through interacting dark resonances

Kh. Saaidi, S. Dehnar Sydid, S. W. Rabiei

We investigate dispersion and absorption properties of a weak probe field in a four level atomic system through interacting dark resonances. We show that two narrow peaks appears in the optical spectra due to the presence of interacting dark resonances. This two narrow peaks leads to the superluminal light propagation with strong absorption. However, if a weak incoherent pump field is exerted to the probe transition, then the peaks structures can be changed such that two absorption peaks transformed to two gain deeps. We Show that both subluminal and superluminal light propagation occur in this system, where controlled by the incoherent pumping strength.

Ultraslow and superluminal light propagation in a four-level atomic system

Cui-Li Cui, Ji-Kui Jia, Jin-Wei Gao +3 more

We theoretically study the coherent interaction of a tripod-type atomic system with three laser fields, i.e., one probe and two coupling, or two probe and one coupling field. Our analytical and numerical results show that, when all three fields are on two-photon resonance, in addition to the Rabi frequencies of the coupling fields, the probe group velocities also depend on the spontaneous decay rates and the initial population distribution. So we can manipulate the probe pulses to achieve controllable ultraslow group velocities by preparing different initial atomic states. With an incoherent pump field applied, a narrow transparent window accompanied by abnormal dispersion may occur in the probe absorption spectrum, which then allows us to switch a probe pulse from ultraslow to superluminal propagation.

Four-level atomic system resonantly pumped by double-wave fields

Uo G

A four-level atomic system interacting with two laser fields and one probe field has been transformed into a four-level Dressed-Atom System interacting with a weak probe absorption field by means of the Dressed-Atom states. By using perturbation theory to solve the density matrix equations in Dressed-Atom representation, the analytic expressions for absorption spectrum are obtained. The properties of absorption spectrum are discussed in detail. Finally, the induced electric dipole moment between the atomic levels and its relation with the absorption spectrum are deduced.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Jianbing Qi

The interaction of a weak probe laser with an inverted Y-type four-level atomic system driven by two additional coherent fields is investigated theoretically. Under the influence of the coherent coupling fields, the steady-state linear susceptibility of the probe laser shows that the system can have single or double electromagnetically induced transparency windows depending on the amplitude and the detuning of the coupling lasers. The corresponding index of refraction associated with the group velocity of the probe laser can be controlled at both transparency windows by the coupling fields. The propagation of the probe field can be switched from superluminal near the resonance to subluminal on resonance within the single transparency window when two coupling lasers are on resonance. We propose an atomic 87Rb system for experimental observation.

Subluminal and Superluminal Propagation of Light in a Ladder-type Four-level Atomic System

Nian Liu

We study nonlinear optical behaviors of a ladder-type four-level cold atomics, where a radio-frequency field couples upper two-folded levels and double dark resonances can arise.Using appropriately chosen parameters, the system will show the transition between the normal chromatic dispersion and the abnormal chromatic dispersion.Changing the intensities of the coupling field and radio-frequency field can manipulate the shift between the subluminal and the superluminal.

A theoretical study of the group refractive index n g in a four-level inverted Y-type system formed by 87Rb atom – laser radiation interaction

Rohit Hazra, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract We report a theoretical investigation of the dispersion resulting from electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the associated group refractive index profiles n g of a four-level inverted Y-type system formed by the interaction of three optical fields (probe, pump and control) with 87Rb atoms. The density matrix equations are derived from the semi-classical Liouville’s equation and solved both numerically and analytically to study the coherent nonlinear optical properties of the medium. We first present the EIT, dispersion and corresponding group index profiles n g under the switch-on/off and on/off-resonance conditions of the pump and control lasers. In presence of both pump and control lasers, an enhancement of the EIT window, a sharp EIT spike and related steeper dispersion slopes are obtained at the line centre of the probe frequency detuning. The group index profiles with the variation of the strengths of individual applied optical fields are studied. The effect of the ground state decoherence rates on the group index profile is examined in detail. It is found that the manipulation of n g values and the corresponding group velocities ν g of the probe light can be easily controlled from subluminal to superluminal values or vice versa by changing the strengths of the applied fields and the ground state decoherence rates. Besides, the EIT-based ‘optical switching’ phenomenon in the medium is explained by studying the variation of the group index with the pump and control Rabi frequencies.
