Finite-temperature effects on the superfluid Bose–Einstein condensation of confined ultracold atoms in three-dimensional optical lattices

T. P. Polak, T. K. Kopeć

We discuss the finite-temperature phase diagram in the three-dimensional Bose–Hubbard (BH) model in the strong correlation regime, relevant for Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices, by employing a quantum rotor approach. In systems with strong on-site repulsive interactions, the rotor U (1) phase variable dual to the local boson density emerges as an important collective field. After establishing the connection between the rotor construction and the on-site interaction in the BH model a robust effective action formalism is developed which allows us to study the superfluid phase transition in various temperature-interaction regimes.

Signal of Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice at finite temperature

Wei Yi, Guin-Dar Lin, L.-M. Duan

We discuss the experimental signal for the Bose-Einstein condensation of cold atoms in an optical lattice at finite temperature. Instead of using the visibility of the interference pattern via time-of-flight imaging, we show that the momentum-space density profile in the first Brillouin zone, in particular its bimodal distribution, provides an unambiguous signal for the Bose-Einstein condensation. We confirm this point with detailed calculations of the change in the atomic momentum distribution across the condensation phase transition, taking into account both the global trapping potential and the atomic interaction effects.

Superfluid-supersolid phase transition of elongated dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperatures

Juan Sánchez-Baena, Thomas Pohl, Fabian Maucher

We analyze the finite-temperature phase diagram of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a tubular geometry. The effect of thermal fluctuations is accounted for by means of Bogoliubov theory employing the local density approximation. In the considered geometry, the superfluid-supersolid phase transition can be of first and second order. We discuss how the corresponding transition point is affected by the finite temperature of the system. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
