Solitons and magnon bound states in ferromagnetic Heisenberg chains

Abstract

We investigate the relation between magnon, magnon bound states, and the classical soliton solutions in the isotropic, the anisotropic-exchange, and the easy-axis ferromagnetic Heisenberg chains. The Dyson-Maleev boson representation is used to study the interaction between magnons, and bound states are investigated in terms of two-spin Green's functions. For easy-axis and anisotropic-exchange magnets, a mapping to the Bose gas with attractive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function interactions is established, and it yields the eigenvalues of the magnon and the $m$th bound state in the weak-coupling and continuum limits. The classical limit of the two-spin Green's function reveals that, to leading order in temperature, the bound-state resonance and the associated effects on the two-magnon continuum survives. An important result is a ${T}^{2}$ dependence of the "binding" energy of the bound-state resonance. As a consequence, in a classical description the bound states enter only in order ${T}^{2}$. Finally, we quantize the soliton solutions according to the Bohr-Sommerfeld and de Broglie rules. This approach is found to be exact for the $s=\frac{1}{2}$ isotropic Heisenberg chain and for sufficiently small wave numbers for all $s$ values. In the anisotropic-exchange and easy-axis models, it agrees with the results obtained from the mapping on the Bose gas, for large quantum numbers and in the easy-axis case for $s\ensuremath{\gg}\frac{1}{2}$ in addition. On this basis, we conclude that the envelope solitons considered here lead to bound-state resonances and associated effects in a classical treatment. Moreover, their semiclassical quantization gives remarkably accurate energy levels.

The complete two-magnon spectrum of the ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain including NNN interactions

A. A. Bahurmuz, P. D. Loly

A study of two-magnon bound states in the next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain begun by Majumdar in 1969 is extended by finding the bound states and continuum resonances for all pair wave-vectors for eta =J 2 /J 1 in the ferromagnetic range of eta =-1/4 to infinity. An exact Green function formalism is combined with the exact analytic results recently obtained by the authors for the lattice Green functions of the system to afford a definitive analysis. The Heisenberg case exhibits a modified nearest-neighbour (NN) type bound state throughout the range of eta studied and for total pair wave-vector (K=k 1 +k 2 ) throughout the zone, in contrast to Majumdar who concluded that this was only the case for positive eta . The continuum also possesses a rich structure which is displayed via a shaded (grey-level) intensity plot in the ( omega , K) plane. An unexpected result is the presence of a second (anti-)bound state just above the continuum for negative eta . The evolution of the bound state and resonance structure is also examined for the transition to dominant NNN interactions. A general formulation is given which includes Ising and uniaxial anisotropies as well as biquadratic exchange for arbitrary range, dimension and Bravais lattice.

The spectrum of the continuous isotropic quantum Heisenberg chain: quantum solitons as magnon bound states

Hans C. Fogedby

The continuous Heisenberg chain is quantised semiclassically. The spectrum consists of unit spin bosons (magnons) and integer spin bosons (solitons) with dispersion laws E=JS(ka) 2 and E n =16JS 3 sin 2 (ka/4S)/n (n=1...) respectively. It is proposed that the n=1 soliton is the magnon and that the spectrum is exact, including all quantum corrections. For S= 1 / 2 the spectrum agrees with results for the discrete chain and it is inferred that the soliton is a multi-magnon bound state.

Bound states and correlation functions in the easy-plane Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain

H J Jensen, Hans C. Fogedby

The two-magnon excitation spectrum of the quantum spin-one easy-plane Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain is discussed. The spin-spin correlation functions are calculated within a systematic perturbation theory in terms of the anisotropy, and contributions from the two-magnon bound states are discussed. The results are compared with the predictions for non-interacting spin waves.

Two-spin-wave spectra of easy-plane ferromagnetic chains

Peter S. Riseborough, Pradeep Kumar

The easy-plane ferromagnetic chain in an applied magnetic field is known to map onto a sine-Gordon field theory, in the classical continuum limit. The sine-Gordon field theory supports breather excitations which, when quantised, are identifiable as a hierarchy of bound states of several small-amplitude excitations. For increasing values of the interaction parameter, the highest members of the hierarchy become unstable to the emission of a soliton/anti-soliton pair. For a critical value of the interaction parameter, even the ground state of the quantised sine-Gordon theory becomes unstable. For the quantum spin system, the excitations corresponding to the two lowest members of the hierarchy of breathers are the single-spin-wave and the two-spin-wave bound states. The authors examine the two-spin-wave bound-state excitations of the quantum spin system directly, using a large-S approach. Although the method does rely on large S, they recover previously derived results valid for arbitrary S, such as the exact two-spin-wave bound states for the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet and the expansion in the anisotropy about this result. In the limit of large anisotropy the two-spin-wave bound state becomes unstable, in a manner suggestive of the instability of the quantum-sine-Gordon field theory.

Two-Magnon Bound States in a Linear Heisenberg Chain with Nearest and Next Nearest Neighbor Interactions

Ikuo Ono, Syogo Mikado, Takehiko Oguchi

The bound state problems associated with two magnons in a linear chain of spin 1/2 with nearest and next nearest neighbor exchange integrals, J and α J , respectively, are studied. The Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Fermi operators in place of spin operators, and an integral equation to determine the bound state energies is obtained. In the cases when the total wave number K of two magnons is π or π/2, analytical solutions are easily obtained. A part of the present results disagrees with Majumdar's ones. Computer studies on the bound states are performed for a finite chain composed of spins up to twenty. They are consistent with the analytical results.

Solitons and magnons in quantum spin chains

M. W. Puga, H Beck

The z-component dynamical spin correlation function S zz (q,w) of the s= 1 / 2 anisotropic XY chain is calculated exactly in the fermion representation. S zz consists of two parts: one (S m ) represents two fermion excitations and the other (S s ) describes scattering from thermally excited fermions. In the continuum limit, S s has the structure of the solitonic part of a classical sine-Gordon correlation function, but the soliton form factor is modified by quantum effects. S m has similarities with the spin-wave continuum form of S zz an isotropic spin chains. The continuum results are compared with those for a discrete chain.
