Generation of spin squeezing via a fully quantum degenerate parametric amplifier

Yang Liu, Jie Song, Wei Qin +2 more

Spin squeezing is one of the most attractive methods for realizing high-precision metrology. In this paper we propose a protocol for generating spin squeezing in an atomic ensemble via a fully quantum degenerate parametric amplifier. We discuss the properties of generating spin squeezing with and without driving the pump cavity. Numerical simulation results show that the generated spin squeezing strength is sizable and is comparable to that obtained using a two-axis twisting model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the protocol is experimentally feasible by introducing the corresponding experimental parameters. Therefore, the proposed protocol provides a promising approach to realize spin squeezing in photon-spin coupling systems.

Amplitude-squared squeezed states

Mark S. Hillery

The real and imaginary parts of the square of the field amplitude obey an uncertainty relation. If the uncertainty in either of these variables is less than it would be in a minimum uncertainty state with equal uncertainties in both variables, the state is amplitude-squared squeezed. This is a nonclassical effect which can be produced by second harmonic generation, two-photon absorption, and degenerate parametric amplification, as well as by higher-order processes. Amplitude-squared squeezing can be converted into normal squeezing by interactions in which the square of the amplitude of one field is coupled to the amplitude of another. Second harmonic generation and some forms of four-wave mixing provide examples of such processes.

Approximate phase-coherent states and their generation

Christopher C. Gerry, Trung Bui

We show that phase-coherent states of a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field are well approximated by certain superpositions of the squeezed vacuum and one-photon states. We further show that the squeezed vacuum and one-photon states can be understood, approximately, as superpositions of phase-coherent states. Our approximate phase-coherent states may be generated by a degenerate parametric down-converter acting on a prepared input state of the form $|0⟩+\ensuremath{\alpha}|1⟩$. The input superposition state itself can be prepared from a coherent state $|\ensuremath{\alpha}⟩$ by a quantum scissors device.
