Abstract

We report a density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) study of S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains. We show the Friedel oscillations in open spin chains within bosonization theory. The bosonization predictions are in excellent agreement with the DMRG calculation. The chain length dependence of the ground state and several low-energy excited state energies are compared with conformal field theory results. Based upon the DMRG calculations for various quantities, the interplay between the system size and the number of optimal states kept in the DMRG is carefully discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Random Dimerized Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

Kazuo Hida

The effect of dimerization on the random antiferomagnetic Heisenberg chain with spin 1/2 is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. The ground state energy, the energy gap distribution and the string order parameter are calculated. Using the finite size scaling analysis, the dimerization dependence of the these quantities are obtained. The ground state energy gain due to dimerization behaves as u a with a > 2 where u denotes the degree of dimerization, suggesting the absence of spin-Peierls instability. It is explicitly shown that the string long range order survives even in the presence of randomness. The string order behaves as u 2β with β∼0.37 in agreement with the recent prediction of real space renormalization group theory (\(\beta =(3-\sqrt{5})/2 \simeq 0.382\)). The physical picture of this behavior in this model is also discussed.

Friedel oscillations in the open Hubbard chain

Gerald Bedürftig, B. Brendel, Holger Frahm +1 more

Using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) technique, we calculate critical exponents for the one-dimensional Hubbard model with open boundary conditions with and without additional boundary potentials at both ends. A direct comparison with open boundary condition Bethe ansatz calculations provides a good check for the DMRG calculations on large system sizes. On the other hand, the DMRG calculations provide an independent check of the predictions of conformal field theory, which are needed to obtain the critical exponents from the Bethe ansatz. From the Bethe ansatz we predict the behavior of the $1/L$-corrected mean value of the Friedel oscillations (for the density and the magnetization) and the characteristic wave vectors, and show numerically that these conjectures are fulfilled with and without boundary potentials. The quality of the numerical results allows us to determine the behavior of the coefficients of the Friedel oscillations as a function of the Hubbard interaction.

A Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Quantum Spin Models with Ring Exchange

Alexander H. L. Chan

In this thesis we discuss in detail the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for simulating low-energy properties of quantum spin models. We implement an original DMRG routine on the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and benchmark its efficiency against exact results (energies, correlation functions, etc.) as well as conformal field-theoretical calculations due to finite-size scaling (ground-state energy and spin gap logarithmic corrections). Moreover, we apply the DMRG to a two-leg square ladder system, where in addition to bilinear exchange terms, we also consider an additional cyclic four-spin ring-exchange. The transposition of four spins gives rise to biquadratic exchange terms which are non-trivial to implement in the DMRG. Intermediate results of the ring-exchange are presented along with the difficulties presently encountered.

Thermodynamics of an Impurity Coupled to a Heisenberg Chain: Density-Matrix Renormalization Group and Monte Carlo Studies

Weijie Zhang, Jun-ichi Igarashi, Peter Fulde

By extending White's density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique to finite temperatures, we calculate the impurity susceptibility for the following systems: (a) a spin-1/2 impurity coupled to a single site of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain and (b) an impurity coupled symmetrically to the two spins at the open ends of the chain. We also perform a Monte Carlo simulation and show that the DMRG adaptation gives reliable results. The calculated impurity susceptibility shows Pauli-like behavior at low temperatures in the former case while a ln T divergence is found in the latter case, in agreement with predictions based on conformal field theory.

Size-dependent low-energy excitations in an alternating spin-1/spin- 12 antiferromagnetic chain: Spin-wave theory and density-matrix renormalization-group studies

Sasmita Mohakud, Swapan Kumar Pati, Seiji Miyashita

We study the properties of the ground state and the low-lying excited states of an alternating spin-1 and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling with a variety of methods, namely, spin-wave analysis, density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method, and exact-diagonalization method. The ground state of this model with $2N$ spins is ferrimagnetic with the total spin ${S}_{G}=N∕2$ for all parameter values. In the long chain limit, a gapless excitation is found with characteristics of goldstone mode of the ferromagnetic order with total spin $S={S}_{G}\ensuremath{-}1$. The lowest gapped excitation, however, exists in the total spin $S={S}_{G}+1$ sector. Interestingly, we find that with the increase in ferromagnetic coupling, spin-wave gapped excitation becomes lower than the massless mode for the large wave numbers. Correspondingly, from DMRG analysis we find that the excitation in the total spin $S={S}_{G}+1$ is lower than that in the total spin $S={S}_{G}\ensuremath{-}1$ when the size of the chain is short and the ferromagnetic interaction is large. Characteristics of these excitations are also reflected in the low temperature thermodynamic quantities, where the low-energy properties are strongly affected by the system size and the coupling strength.

Haldane gap for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain revisited

Xiaoqun Wang, Shaojing Qin, Lu Yu

Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we carry out a large scale numerical calculation for the $S=2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Performing systematic scaling analysis for both the chain length L and the number of optimal states kept in the iterations m, the Haldane gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}(2)$ is estimated accurately as $(0.0876\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0013)J.$ Our systematic analysis for the $S=2$ chains not only clarifies the controversies arising from various DMRG calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, but also sheds light on how to obtain reliable results from the DMRG calculations for other similar complicated systems.
