Abstract

A method is presented for obtaining sub-Doppler and subnatural narrowing and increased absorption of a spectral line. The ultranarrow spectral line is confined between two closely spaced electromagnetically induced transparency windows in a nearly degenerate tripod atomic system formed by an ${F}_{g}=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{e}=0$ transition, split by a magnetic field. The system is driven by a $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-polarized pump and probed by a tunable $\ensuremath{\pi}$-polarized laser. It can be used to measure small magnetic fields and also as a magneto-optic switch.

Ultranarrow absorptive spectral line induced by microwave field

Zhengfeng Hu, Ma Yi-Sheng, Jianliao Deng +2 more

This paper investigates the absorptive spectral lines of four-level atomic system driven by a coupling, probe and microwave fields. Due to the perturbation of the microwave field, the original electromagnetically induced transparency is changed to electromagnetically induced absorption and the absorptive spectral line can be very narrow. This ultranarrow spectral line has potential applications to the microwave atomic frequency standard and the measurement of very weak magnetic field.

Controlling optical properties and optical bistability via an external magnetic field in a tripod-type atomic medium

Hoang Thi Huong, Le Nguyen Mai Anh, Le Thi Hoa Lai +5 more

We investigated control of optical bistability behavior based on the probe absorption and Kerr nonlinearity properties in a tripod-type degenerate four-level atom system under an external magnetic field. This excitation configuration can provide two transparent spectral regions on the probe absorption profile. It can be transitioned between the transparency and absorption regimes by turning on or off the magnetic field in different frequency domains. We can effortlessly transform one into two transparency windows, and vice versa, by modifying the intensity of the magnetic field. The investigations showed the enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity around one/two-EIT windows, thereby forming one/two-channel optical bistability in these frequency regions. In addition, the coupling field intensity, the probe frequency detuning, and the atomic cooperation parameter have also significantly influenced the absorption spectrum, Kerr nonlinearity, and optical bistability. The proposed model has useful applications for storage and optical switching, and nonlinear logic gates in optical communications processing.

Transfer-of-coherence-enhanced stimulated emission and electromagnetically induced absorption in Zeeman split F_g-->F_e=F_g−1 atomic transitions

R. Meshulam, T. Zigdon, A. D. Wilson‐Gordon +1 more

The probe absorption spectra in single and multiple tripod systems formed when a weak sigma polarized pump and a tunable pi polarized probe interact with a Zeeman split F(g)-->F(e)=F(g)-1 atomic transition are characterized by two interfering stimulated Raman features separated by an electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) peak at the line center. These Raman features can appear as either sharp stimulated emission peaks or electromagnetically induced transparency windows. In the multitripod systems, the EIA and stimulated emission peaks derive from the combined effects of interference between the stimulated Raman features and transfer of coherence from the excited to ground states.

Realization of cavity linewidth narrowing via interacting dark resonances in a tripod-type electromagnetically induced transparency system

Ying Bo Kang, Yueping Niu, Dijun Chen +3 more

Cavity linewidth narrowing via double-dark resonances is experimentally observed using the Rb87 Zeeman splitting sublevels. With the steep dispersion led by the interacting dark resonances in the tripod-type electromagnetically induced transparency system, we narrow the cavity linewidth to 250 kHz at room temperature. Furthermore, the position of this ultranarrow cavity linewidth can be tuned in a 60 MHz coupling field detuning range.

Interacting double dark resonances in a hot atomic vapor of helium

Santosh Kumar, T. Lauprêtre, Rupamanjari Ghosh +2 more

We experimentally and theoretically study two different tripod configurations using metastable helium (${}^{4}$He*), with the probe field polarization perpendicular and parallel to the quantization axis, defined by an applied weak magnetic field. In the first case, the two dark resonances interact incoherently and merge together into a single electromagnetically induced transparency peak with increasing coupling power. In the second case, we observe destructive interference between the two dark resonances inducing an extra absorption peak at the line center.
