Abstract

We report the generation of polarization-entangled photons by cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The bandwidth of entangled photons is reduced to that of the optical parometric oscillator and the conversion rate is enhanced by cavity. The time interval between the conjugate two photon is prolongated so that it can be directly measured by a common detector. The time correlation function of the entangled-photons pair shows a time-oscillatory characteristic. To demonstrate the entanglement, we experimentally obtain two-photon quantum interference for the polarization variable.

Cavity Enhanced Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion for the Prolongation of Correlation Time between Conjugate Photons

Z. Y. Ou, Y. J. Lu

By resonating both fields of the spontaneous parametric down-conversion with an optical cavity, the bandwidth of the fields is reduced to a level that can be resolved by photodetectors. This enables us to directly measure the distribution of the time intervals between the two down-converted photons. The correlation time is found inversely proportional to the down-conversion bandwidth. In the meantime, the signal levels of the fields are greatly enhanced by the resonance. Such a two-photon source will find wide application in quantum information processing.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs from a cavity-enhanced down-conversion source in Sagnac configuration

Elena Arenskötter, Stephan Kucera, Jürgen Eschner

Summary form only given. An efficient resource of entanglement in atom-photon-based quantum networks are polarization-entangled photon pairs generated by type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Compatibility in frequency and bandwidth between such photons and a single trapped40Ca+-ion was first shown in [1]. The best SPDC entanglement values so far have been achieved by single-pass conversion in Sagnac configuration [2]. On the other hand, the highest pair rates are reported in cavity-enhanced sources [3]. The latter, however, tend to suffer from reduced state purity due to increasing probability of generating double pairs, and thermal effects in the crystal.

Generation of Narrow-Band Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs for Atomic Quantum Memories

Xiao‐Hui Bao, Yong Qian, Jian Hua Yang +4 more

We report an experimental realization of a narrow band polarization-entangled photon source with a linewidth of 9.6 MHz through cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This linewidth is comparable to the typical linewidth of atomic ensemble-based quantum memories. Single-mode output is realized by setting a reasonable cavity length difference between different polarizations, using of temperature controlled etalons and actively stabilizing the cavity. The entangled property is characterized with quantum state tomography, giving a fidelity of 94% between our state and a maximally entangled state. The coherence length is directly measured to be 32 m through two-photon interference.

Postselection-Free Cavity-Enhanced Narrow-Band Orbital Angular Momentum Entangled Photon Source

Pei Wan, Wen-Zheng Zhu, Yan-Chao Lou +5 more

Cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) provides a significant way to produce ∼10 MHz narrow-band photon pairs, which matches the bandwidth of photon for quantum memory. However, the output photon pairs from the cavity are not entangled, and postselection is required to create the entanglement so far, so the direct output of cavity-enhanced narrow-band entangled photon pairs is still an open challenge. Here, we propose a solution that realizes the first postselection-free cavity-enhanced narrow-band entangled photon pairs. The entanglement is achieved in degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) by an OAM-conservation SPDC process in an actively and precisely controlled cavity supporting degenerate high-order OAM modes. The measured linewidth and fidelity are 13.8 MHz and 0.969(3), respectively, for the directly generated OAM entangled two photons. We deterministically transfer the OAM entanglement to polarization one with almost no loss and obtain polarization entangled two photons with a fidelity of 0.948(2). Moreover, we produce narrow-band OAM-polarization hyperentangled photon pairs with a fidelity of 0.850(2), which is realized by interfering the two photons on a polarizing beam splitter (PBS) and postselecting the events of one and only one photon on each PBS port. Novel cavity may find applications in cavity-based light-matter interaction. Our results provide an efficient and promising approach to create narrow-band entangled photon sources for memory-based long-distance quantum communication and network.

Polarization entanglement of photons provides a superior environment to demonstrate quantum info-communication protocols. Thus far, several methods using parametric down-conversion process have been realized to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs. In this report, we propose a novel method to generate polarization entanglement from spatially correlated photon pairs and demonstrate its experimental verification.

Demonstration of spectral correlation control in a source of polarization entangled photon pairs at telecom wavelength

Spectrally correlated photon pairs can be used to improve performance of long range fiber based quantum communication protocols. We present a source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion producing polarization entangled photons without spectral filtering. In addition, the spectral correlation within the photon pair can be controlled by changing the pump pulse duration or coupled spatial modes characteristics.
