Electron Correlations Observed Through Intensity Interferometry: Study of Model Initial State Wave Functions

Abstract

Recently, a new method of analysing electron correlations based on intensity interferometry has been applied to double ionization of He and Ne by fast ion impact [1]. The data reveal sensitively correlation effects while they appear to be very insensitive to the collision dynamics. In order to analyse the role of the initial state electron correlation a statistically defined correlation function based on intensity interferometry was calculated for the ground state of He. In a comparative study of model wave functions we demonstrate that correlation can be considered from a statistical point of view which offers a new tool to study correlation effects in many-particle systems.

Electronic correlation spectroscopy in condensed matter

B. D. Napitu, Y. Pavlyukh, Jamal Berakdar

On the basis of formal analysis and the perturbation many-body theory we point out the conditions under which short and long-range electronic correlations in condensed matter can be mapped by means of two-particle coincidence spectroscopy. For particle-impact induced electron emission we show that the coincidence intensity integrated over the slow ejected electron is related to the density-density time correlation function. In the case of a fast incoming and outgoing projectile and a slow emitted electron we relate the intensity to the two-particle and higher order correlations. Erects of two-particle correlations on the two-particle spectral density are investigated by means of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) applied to the Hubbard model.

Ionization of two-electron atom (xenon) studied by Bohmian mechanics theory*

Yang Song, Shu Han, Yujun Yang +2 more

The ionization dynamics of two-electron atom in an intense laser field is studied by the Bohmian mechanics (BM) theory, and the xenon atomic potential function is used as a model. The single ionization process and double ionization process are calculated by the BM theory and their results are in good agreement with those calculated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The analyses of the types, trajectories, and forces of Bohmian particles (BPs) undergoing the single and double ionizations indicate that the re-collision process accounts for a considerable proportion in the singly ionized cases. Furthermore, the analysis of the work done by the external force acting on the BPs shows that the quantum force plays an important role in the re-collision process. This work is helpful in understanding the ionization of two-electron atom in an intense laser field.

Electron-Photon Coincidence Technique for Atomic Collisions

Mevlüt Doğan, Hüseyin Ali Yalım

A brief review is given on development of electron-photon coincidence studies from electron impact of atoms. The theory of electron-photon correlations is outlined in detail in terms of cross sections of excited atoms and excited state charge clouds. The state of a target atom is determined by the various orientation and alignment parameters and the multipole moments of the excited atom. General considerations, such as coherence effects in impact excitation, the influence of fine and hyperfine structures in correlations are taken into account. The relationship between scattering amplitudes (including their phases) and target parameters is worked out for singlet and doublet transitions.

Applications of Photon Correlation Techniques to Fermions

Mark P. Silverman

The intensity correlation of fermion beams provides a novel interferometric approach, hitherto largely unexplored, to the investigation of the wave-like attributes, exchange symmetry, and interaction with potentials of multifermion states. Predicted quantum interference effects derive from the indistinguishability of particles as well as from the spatial separation of particle paths.

Features of the bremsstrahlung accompanying collisions with a hydrogen atom in an excited state

Andrei V. Korol, O. I. Obolensky, А. В. Соловьев

The features of the bremsstrahlung appearing during a collision of a fast charged particle with a hydrogen atom (or hydrogenic ion) in an excited state are investigated. It is shown that the emission spectrum of photons with energies greater than the ionization potential of a given excited state (except the 2 s state) displays narrow lines, which are caused by de-excitation of the atom in an intermediate state. It is demonstrated that the scattering of a charged particle on an excited hydrogen atom produces a feature which is not observed in the case of scattering on a ground-state hydrogen atom. Expressions are obtained for the generalized dynamic polarizability of the hydrogen atom and hydrogenic ions in the 1 s , 2 s , and 3 s states. A method is developed for deriving expressions for the generalized dynamic polarizabilities of other excited states through the use of the Coulomb Green’s function and representation of the electronic wave function in terms of the differentiation of the generating functions of Laguerre polynomials. The bremsstrahlung cross sections for electrons and positrons colliding with hydrogen atoms in the 1 s , 2 s , and 3 s states are calculated.

New Measure of Electron Correlation

Alex D. Gottlieb, Norbert J. Mauser

We propose to quantify the correlation inherent in a many-electron (or many-fermion) wave function $\ensuremath{\psi}$ by comparing it to the unique uncorrelated state that has the same 1-particle density operator as does $|\ensuremath{\psi}⟩⟨\ensuremath{\psi}|$.
