Effect of Spin-Orbit Impurity Scattering in the Superconducting State oft–JModel

Toshifumi Yagi, Kazuhiro Kuboki

We study the effect of magnetic impurities in the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconducting (SC) state of the two dimensional t-J model. The spin-orbit and the spin-exchange interactions are examined by treating the impurity as a classical spin. The Bogoliubov de Gennes equation derived within a slave-boson mean-field approximation is solved numerically at T = 0. The spin-exchange scattering induces spin-triplet p-wave SC order parameters near the impurity, while a SC state with broken time-reversal symmetry and a spontaneous current appears in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction. When both interactions coexist, it turns out that a state which carries a spontaneous spin current occurs.

Imaging the effect of a non-magnetic impurity in a RVB superconductor

Manuela Capello, Didier Poilblanc

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) by providing images of the effects of individual zinc-impurities in cuprate superconductors with unprecedented atomic-resolution offers a stringent test to models of correlated fermions for high-temperature superconductors. Using a t-J model supplemented by Variational Monte Carlo many-body techniques, the spatial dependence of the hole density and of the valence bond and superconducting pairing amplitudes around the impurity are computed. A cross-shaped four-fold symmetric structure very similar to the observed STM observation is found, giving strong credit to the model.

Formation of magnetic impurities and pair-breaking effect in a superfluid Fermi gas

Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate the introduction of magnetic impurities into a superfluid Fermi gas. In the presence of a population imbalance (${N}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}>{N}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$, where ${N}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ is the number of Fermi atoms with pseudospin $\ensuremath{\sigma}=\ensuremath{\uparrow},\ensuremath{\downarrow}$), we show that nonmagnetic potential scatterers embedded in the system are magnetized in the sense that some of the excess spin-$\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ atoms are localized around them. They destroy the superfluid order parameter around them, as in the case of the magnetic impurity effect discussed in the superconductivity literature. This pair-breaking effect naturally leads to localized excited states below the superfluid excitation gap. To confirm our idea in a simple manner, we consider an attractive Fermi-Hubbard model within the mean-field theory at $T=0$. We determine consistent superfluid properties around a nonmagnetic impurity, such as the superfluid order parameter, local population imbalance, as well as the single-particle density of states, in the presence of a population imbalance. Since competition between superconductivity and magnetism is one of the most fundamental problems in condensed-matter physics, our results would be useful for the study of this important issue in cold Fermi gases.
