Abstract

The question of nonlinear transient effects similar to self-induced transparency and adiabatic following is examined for a moving Rydberg atom undergoing two-photon transition in a lossless cavity having spatial field distribution. Also, comparison is made with the case where an atom is undergoing one-photon transitions under similar conditions.

We study the nonlinear transient effects similar to self-induced transparency and adiabatic following for a moving Rydberg atom undergoing a two-photon transition in an ideal cavity having a spatial field distribution for an uncorrelated two-mode coherent state. A comparative study is made of the case where an atom is undergoing a one-photon transition in a single-mode coherent field.

Atomic-coherence effect on the Jaynes-Cummings model with atomic motion

Amitabh Joshi, Min Xiao

The nonlinear transient effects, similar to self-induced transparency and adiabatic following, are studied for a moving two-level atom that is entering into an ideal microwave cavity in a coherent superposition of its states. The atom undergoes a one-photon transition in the cavity, sustaining a spatial field distribution for a single-mode coherent (or thermal or Fock state) field. For some particular choice of parameters of atomic coherence, removal of an appreciable amount of field energy from the cavity could be observed.

SPONTANEOUS EMISSION BY MOVING ATOMS UNDERGOING TWO PHOTON-TRANSITION IN THE STRONG COUPLING REGIME

The dependence of spontaneous emission on atomic motion for an atom undergoing two-photon transition and moving along the axis of a Fabry-Perot cavity is analyzed here. For this purpose we consider the strong coupling limit of atom and cavity field mode and demonstrate the effects of atomic velocity and spatial mode structure of cavity mode on the excitation probability of atom.

Quantum Electrodynamics of a Rydberg Atom Making Two-photon Transitions in the Binomial State of the Field in a Lossless Cavity

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The dynamic and statistical properties of a system of an effective two-level atom making two-photon transitions in the binomial state of the field in a lossless cavity are discussed. The binomial state enables the study of the development of the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of the Rabi oscillations as the field state is changed from a pure number state to a coherent state. This is because the binomial state, which is a pure number state in one limit, develops into a coherent state as some parameters are changed appropriately. The effect of Stark shifts arising due to the transitions to virtual levels are also investigated.

Two-photon self-induced transparency in a resonant medium. II. Transient pulse behaviour

N Tan-no, Kenichi Yokoto, Humio Inaba

For pt.I see ibid., vol.8, no.3, 339 (1975). The transient behaviour of two short optical pulses in two-photon coherent propagation is obtained by calculating numerically the coherent propagation equations which couple the two electromagnetic pulses and the atomic system in self-consistent fashion. The coherent interaction of the two different frequency pulses gives rise to lossless propagation in the absorptive medium. This description is characterized by a two-photon area theorem. Novel coherent propagation effects of peak amplification and multiple pulse breakup are found. These effects are ascribed to two-photon self-induced transparency analogous to that of a one-photon transition in a two-level system. A difference of input intensity between the two different frequency pulses yields curious modulation effects involving sharp peak amplification and marked pulse breakup for the low-intensity input. In contrast, the high-intensity input pulse displays a smooth variation with distance and time. Low-loss pulse transmission above threshold, and pulse advance and delay are found for the present case in contrast to that for one-photon self-induced transparency.

RYDBERG ATOMS AND RADIATION IN A RESONANT CAVITY I, THEORY

S. Haroche, Claude Fabre, J. M. Raimond +3 more

We analyze in this paper various aspects of the interaction of Rydberg atoms with resonant electromagnetic cavity. We show that an ensemble of Rydberg atoms coupled to a single field mode at a finite temperature behaves as a single quantum object exhibiting features of Bose-Einstein statistics and Brownian motion. We analyze the transient amplification of the blackbody field by a Rydberg sample and study the change of the photon emission statistics as a function of time. We also show that an isolated Rydberg atom in a cavity undergoes either an oscillating or a damped evolution according to the respective values of the atom to field coupling and cavity damping times and we analyze this effect in term of a modification of the vacuum field modes surrounding the atom. Experiments to check these effects are under progress and will be described in next paper.
