Maser Operation at Signal Frequencies Higher than Pump Frequency

Frank R. Arams

Methods using harmonic spin coupling for operating solid-state masers with signal frequencies higher than the pump frequency are discussed. Expressions for the population inversion ratios are presented, and the maximum signal-to-pump-frequency ratios are calculated. Experimental data is presented on a ruby maser which is operated using the symmetrical method. Amplification was obtained at signal frequencies from 10,320 to 10,740 Mc, using pump frequencies ranging from 9580 to 9670 Mc. An experiment in which maser operation is obtained simultaneously at two frequencies is described.

Nonlinear collective dynamics and microwave comb generation in a diamond maser

Christoph W. Zollitsch, Jonas N. Bach, Christopher W. M. Kay +1 more

Optically pumped room temperature masers are a promising platform for driven dissipative spin photon physics beyond steady state emission. Here we observe a sequence of dynamical thresholds in a room temperature nitrogen vacancy diamond maser as the optical pump is increased above the conventional masing threshold. The first threshold yields narrow-line continuous wave emission, while a second threshold produces a periodic train of microwave pulses whose repetition rate generates a frequency comb spectrum. At higher pump power, a third threshold gives rise to pulses with an oscillatory, frequency chirped decay. Time-resolved measurements link the comb directly to self-pulsing dynamics and Fourier analysis of individual bursts reveals a broad distribution of frequencies consistent with collective spin-resonator dynamics in an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. These results establish the diamond maser as a room temperature platform for nonlinear nonequilibrium light matter dynamics and microwave comb generation.

Three-Level Maser Action in Gas II. Experimental Study on Formic Acid

Tatsuo Yajima

The quantum mechanical behavior of the three-level maser was experimentally studied using the rotational spectrum of HCOOH molecule at microwave frequencies. By using the 2 11 ←1 10 line at the frequency of 46581 Mc as the pumping, the induced emission of the 2 11 →2 12 line at the frequency of 4916 Mc was obtained. For a strong pumping, the splitting of emission line due to resonant modulation effect was observed. The line-shape of emission signal under off-resonant pumping was studied in detail. The emission spectrum due to simultaneous emission and absorption of two photons corresponding to the signal and the pumping was observed for the condition of far off-resonant pumping. The results were compared with the theory described in the previous paper, and was found to be in good agreement in many respects. Some discrepancies concerning emission intensity are also discussed. An application of the multiple quantum transition to a four-level system of HC·OOH is described.
