Experimental investigations of thermally stimulated degenerate four-wave mixing

Abstract

Results of experimental investigations aimed at testing efficiency-related aspects of thermally induced degenerate four-wave mixing in absorbing solutions are reported. The effects of fluorescence, read beam time delay, and forward beam angle variations are measured and shown to strongly influence the achievable thermal grating diffraction efficiency. In particular, a strong decrease of conjugation efficiency is observed as a function of increasing angle between the forward beams. Conjugate beam diffraction efficiencies as high as 17 percent were measured for the dye RhB in acetone. Based on our observations, we predict that still higher conjugation efficiencies will be feasible under optimal conditions with the thermal grating mechanism.

Thermally induced degenerate four-wave mixing

Hanna J. Hoffman

Time-dependent aspects of thermally stimulated degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in absorbing liquid solutions have been theoretically investigated through a coupled electromagnetic-hydrodynamic theory originally formulated to study stimulated scattering processes. The various time scales involved in the interaction (including those characteristic of acoustic modes and thermalization effects) are identified and relevant laser and media parametrical relations are sorted out. Suitable approximation regimes are then outlined, corresponding to specific experimental situations of interest and allowing for relatively simple and tractable analytic relations to be derived. In particular, the effects of finite rise time of thermalization were studied and found to lead to a possibly strong angular dependence in the conjugate reflectivity. Acoustic modes and their influence on the process efficiency were also investigated. The calculations culminate in a set of guidelines for optimizing conjugation efficiencies, through judicious choice of dye-solvent combinations, "read" pump time delays, experimental arrangements, and laser pulse parameters.

Temporal behavior of a conjugated beam by degenerate four-wave mixing in azo dyes

Sylvain Mailhot, Pierre Galarneau, Roger A. Lessard +1 more

Degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) is a simple method to achieve phase conjugation. It uses the third-order nonlinearity of the electric susceptibility to produce changes in the optical properties of materials. A dynamic grating is then induced. Such gratings might be used as fast optical memories in optical computing. Our aim is to find media with large nonlinear susceptibilities and fast response time. We report phase conjugation of 532-nm laser radiation by DFWM in dye solutions. The time dependence of the conjugated wave is investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical predictions. We have also studied the influence of the solvents, dye concentration, and pump intensity on the phase conjugated signal. The results are compared with those predicted by three nonlinear mechanisms. Thermally induced refractive-index changes, Kerr effect, and saturable absorption are considered.

Investigation of degenerate four-wave mixing and phase conjugation in organic dye solutions

Ang Z

Phase conjugation of backward-and forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing using a nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in four-level organic dye solutions was investigated. The conversion efficiency of 22% has been obtained in a 2.5×10-5-molar solution of chlorophyll A in methylalcohol with a 5mm interaction length and a pumping energy of ~8mj from SH of a Q-switched Nd:YAG. Degenerate four-wave mixing by two-photon resonant-enhancement in the solution of rhodamine 6G in alcohol was investigated. Measurements were performed which described the dependance of nonlinear reflectivities on the molar concentrations of the media and the intensities of the pumping and object waves. Phase conjugation characteristics of forward-wave in four-wave mixing process were theoretically analysed. Experiments have confirmed the theoretical prediction. The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing has been extended to the doublet degenerate casa. Using this method, image conversion from 1.06μm to 5320 A has been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long saturable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in diehloroethane. Theoretical analysis shows that using a medium, which is a near resonant absorber for the infrared object wave but transparent for the visible reconstruction wave, the conversion efficiency may be well in excess of unity.

Phase conjugation of backward-and forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing using a nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in four-level organic dye solutions was investigated. The conversion efficiency of 22% had been obtained in a 2.5 X 10-5 - molar solution of Chlorophyll A in methylalcohol with a 5 mm interaction length and a pumping energy of ~ 8 mJ from SH of a Q-switched Nd: YAG. Degene-rate four-wave mixing by two-photon resonant-enhancement in the solution of rhodamine 6G in alcohol was studied. Measurements were performed which described the dependence of nonlinear reflectivities on the molar concentrations of the media and the intensities of the pumping and object waves. Phase conjugation characteristics of forward-wave in four-wave mixing process were theoretically analysed. Experiments have cofirmed the theoretical prediction. The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing had been ex-tended to the doublet degenerate case. Using this method image conversion from 1.06 μm to 5320 ? had been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long satu-rable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in dichloroethane. Theoretical analy-sis showed that using a medium, which is a near resonant absorber for the infrared object wave but is transparent for the visible reconstruction wave, the conversion efficiency may be well in excess of unity.

Phase conjugation in two photon absorbing dye films by degenerate four-wave mixing

Shubhrajyotsna Aithal, P. S. Aithal, Navakant Bhat

Optical phase conjugation through degenerate four-wave mixing is observed in 4-[4-(Dimethylamino)styryl]-1-docosyl pyridinium bromide (DASPB) dye-doped in Polymethyl methacrylate - metacrylic acid (PMMA-PA) polymer films under low-power, continuous-wave laser irradiation. A maximum phase conjugate efficiency of 0.42% has been obtained for probe beam intensity at 2.5 W/cm2. Phase conjugation is observed for both parallel- and orthogonally-polarized probe and pump beams. The maximum PC reflectivity is achieved when the angle between probe beam and forward pump beam is 8 degrees. The effects of dye concentration, inter beam angle between probe and forward pump beam on phase conjugation reflectivity are also studied. PC signal strength first increases and then decreases with time. PC reflectivity is also increased by increasing the intensity of the backward and forward pump beam. The polarization and intensity profile are verified to be preserved in the conjugate signal. The predominant phase conjugation signal is attributed due to the saturable absorption and two photon induced fluorescence property of the dye molecules.
