Abstract

A photodetachment experiment has been performed with the formation of atoms in highly excited states of high positive and negative polarizabilities. A semiclassical model has been developed to describe the effect of the repulsive polarization potential in the vicinity of the photoreaction threshold.

Threshold behaviour in photodetachment into a final state with large negative polarizability

Johan Rohlén, Anton O. Lindahl, Hannes Hultgren +3 more

In a recent experiment, Lindahl et al. ( Lindahl A. O. et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. , 108 (2012) 033004) observed a new threshold behavior in the photodetachment of the potassium negative ion when the residual atom is left in the state. Unfortunately the resonance close to threshold made it more difficult to apply the semi-classical model that was developed to describe the threshold behavior. In this paper we present a study of the threshold behavior of the partial cross-section in the photodetachment of the sodium negative ion. The experiment was conducted using a collinear beams apparatus where the detection was performed using a resonance ionization scheme. We observe the same threshold behavior as in the previous experiment, but without any obfuscating resonance. The model derived in the previous paper is found to fit the observed cross-section up to 35 meV above threshold. The present experiment clearly demonstrates the threshold behaviour for the fundamental process of a free electron moving in the field of an atom with a large negative polarizability.

Effect of polarization on photodetachment thresholds

J. Sandström, G. Haeffler, Igor Yu. Kiyan +5 more

We have measured the near-threshold cross sections for the photodetachment of ${\mathrm{Li}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ into the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(2{p}_{1∕2})$, ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3p)$, ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(kp)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3s)$, and ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(kp)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(4s)$ continuum channels and the photodetachment of ${\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ into the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{K}(4{p}_{3∕2})$ continuum channel. The data was analyzed using both a top-of-barrier model and a modified effective range theory. Both approaches explicitly take into account the significant polarization potential in the final continuum channels. The study involving both experiment and theory enabled us to investigate the effect of the polarization on near-threshold photodetachment. Furthermore, since photodetachment and electron scattering are related in the half-collision concept, we were able to determine low-energy electron scattering quantities such as phase shifts, elastic cross sections, and $s$ wave scattering lengths for electron scattering on excited Li and K atoms. The results allowed us to predict a virtual state in the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3p)$ system.

Polarization effects in two-colour photodetachment of negative ions

Wilhelm Becker, Li-E Li, John K. McIver

Two-colour photodetachment of a negative ion modelled by a three-dimensional delta-function potential is theoretically investigated. The high-frequency low-intensity field is closely tuned to the detachment energy of the ion, the low-frequency high intensity field creates a ponderomotive potential of 2.6% of the detachment energy and at the same time sidebands. The two fields are circularly polarized with either equal or opposite polarizations. In accordance with the Wigner threshold law, for equal and opposite polarizations, the sideband-induced thresholds are above or below the one-photon detachment threshold, respectively. The one-photon threshold is markedly visible for opposite polarizations at the position shifted by the full ponderomotive potential. For equal polarizations and low frequencies it is not noticeable at all.

Threshold shifts in negative-ion photodetachment

Stanley L. Haan, J. Cooper

The authors study threshold shifts theoretically in negative-ion photodetachment, using the approach of Rzezewski, Lewenstein and Eberly (1982), by considering two model couplings for the discrete-state continuum interaction specific to outgoing p and s electrons. They apply their results to the photodetachment of Pt - and predict a threshold shift which is directly proportional to laser intensity and is approximately 2.3*10 -10 I cm -1 (W cm -2 ) -1 . This shift appears too small to be measured by present day techniques.

Photodetachment of atomic negative ions near threshold in a magnetic field

Daniel J. Larson, R. C. Stoneman

The effect of final-state interactions on the photodetachment cross section of negative ions in a magnetic field is discussed. Experiments on the location of the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ threshold in ${\mathbf{S}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ as a function of magnetic field show clearly the effect of the zero-point energy of an electron in a magnetic field. The experiments also give a precise value for the electron affinity and provide information about the interaction between the atom and the detached electron.

Near-threshold photodetachment of heavy alkali-metal anions

Cristian Bahrim, Uwe Thumm, A.A. Khuskivadze +1 more

We calculate near-threshold photodetachment cross sections for ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\ensuremath{-}},$ ${\mathrm{Cs}}^{\ensuremath{-}},$ and ${\mathrm{Fr}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ using the Pauli equation method with a model potential describing the effective electron-atom interaction. Parameters of the model potential are fitted to reproduce ab initio scattering phase shifts obtained from Dirac R-matrix calculations. Special care is taken to formulate the boundary conditions near the atomic nucleus for solving the Pauli equation, based on the analytic solution of the Dirac equation for a Coulomb potential. We find a ${}^{3}{P}_{1}^{o}$ resonance contribution to the photodetachment cross section of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\ensuremath{-}},$ ${\mathrm{Cs}}^{\ensuremath{-}},$ and ${\mathrm{Fr}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions. Our calculated total photodetachment cross sections for Cs agree with experiments after tuning the resonance position by 2.4 meV. For ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\mathrm{Fr}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ the resonance contribution is much smaller than for Cs. We therefore also provide angle-differential cross sections and asymmetry parameters which are much more sensitive to the resonant contribution than total cross sections.
