Abstract

When Rabi frequency is greatly less than frequency detuning from rigorous one- and two- photon resonance the evolution equations describing an ultra-short pulse propagation in a fiber containing resonant impurities were obtained. The influence of impurities on optical soliton dynamics investigated under these conditions.

Coherent propagation of an optical pulse in a fibre waveguide containing quasiresonant impurities. Adiabatic following approximation

Andrei I. Maimistov

An analysis is made of the propagation of ultrashort pulses in a fibre waveguide doped with resonant impurities. Equations describing the evolution of a pulse in the case of one-photon and two-photon resonances are derived on condition that the Rabi frequency is considerably less than the detuning from an exact resonance. The influence of impurity atoms on the parameters of a pulse and on the characteristics of its evolution (ultrashort pulse duration, 'soliton threshold', and ultrashort pulse collapse threshold) is determined. The corrections to these quantities have different signs for different types of resonance.

Ultrashort optical pulse propagation in Kerr medium with quasi-resonant impurities

Ashat M. Basharov, Andrei I. Maimistov

A nonlinear evolution equation describing an ultrashort optical pulse propagation under quasi-resonant condition is derived by the unitary transformation method. This method allowed us to obtain the terms which are not taken into account within the framework of the adiabatic following approximation. The analysis of the nonlinear evolution equation and example of its application are given.

Propagation of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions

Askhat M Basharov, Andrei I. Maimistov

The study of the propagation of an electromagnetic ultrashort pulse in a Kerr medium with impurity atoms under quasi-resonance conditions is reported, which demonstrates the efficiency of the unitary transformation method in nonlinear optics. An equation is derived, which differs from the known equations describing the evolution of a pulse envelope and takes into account the dispersion of the nonlinear response and the dispersion of group velocities.

Soliton Regime of Second Harmonic Generation in the Presence of Quasi-Resonant Impurities

Sazonov S.V.

Abstract We report a study of a soliton-like regime of second harmonic generation in a crystal containing impurity atoms with a quantum transition, which is quasi-resonant with respect to a laser pulse at the fundamental frequency. Mismatches of phase and group velocities are taken into account. It is shown that quasi-resonant impurities, on the one hand, lead to a decrease in the generation efficiency, and, on the other hand, they are capable of creating conditions for the implementation of a two-frequency soliton regime, which is impossible in their absence.

Short optical pulse polarization dynamics in a nonlinear birefringent doped fiber

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

Numerical solutions are obtained of the full self-consistent system of equations for the counter, rotating polarization components of the field of a short optical pulse propagating in a nonlinear birefringent fiber and in the ensemble of the energy-level degenerate doped resonance atoms implanted in the fiber material. In every cross section of the fiber, the ellipticity of the polarized wave experiences a complex evolution in time accompanied by rapid changes of the azimuthal angle due to the interplay of the dispersion and the Kerr nonlinear self-and cross-phase modulation. The reciprocal effect of the impurities on the traveling pulse causes oscillations of the pulse envelope that can completely distort the shape of the input signal, while the resonance absorption can drive the birefringence process from the nonlinear regime back to the linear one.

Short pulse evolution in two-photon-absorbing media as a function of frequency and initial energy

Konstantin N. Drabovich, L. M. Kocharyan

A numerical analysis is made of the frequency dependence of the evolution of the envelopes and energy loss of short optical pulses propagating under two-photon resonance conditions. It is established that for pulses with an initial energy situated in the range 2 π ( m +1)> θ o >2 π m , there are m intervals of resonance-frequency detunings within which the pulse evolution differs qualitatively. It is shown that a quasimultistage frequency dependence of the energy loss for a fixed length of medium may serve as a test for the coherence of the resonant interaction.
