Off-resonant Raman-echo quantum memory for inhomogeneously broadened atoms in a cavity

Sergey A. Moiseev

A scheme of photon echo-based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multimode optical quantum memory.

Quantum Memory with CRIB in an Asymmetric Optical Cavity

We propose an efficient quantum memory scheme with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening in an optical cavity. When the absorption per cavity round trip exactly matches the transmission of the coupling mirror(impedance matching condition),we show that the input light field can be completely absorbed by an inhomogeneous broadening atomic ensemble. From calculation we obtain that either a forward or a backward retrieval process the quantum memory efficiency can reach unity even for a small optical depth of the atomic system. If there is no cavity,100% efficiency is obtained only for extremely large optical depth.A high efficiency for the quantum memory at a small optical depth is easily achieved in practice. Therefore our proposal offers promising possibilities for the practical realization of high quantum memory efficiency.

Photon-echo quantum memory with complete use of natural inhomogeneous broadening

Sergey A. Moiseev

The photon-echo quantum memory is based on a controlled rephasing of the atomic coherence excited by a signal light field in the inhomogeneously broadened resonant line. Here, we demonstrate an active mechanism of the atomic rephasing that provides a perfect retrieval of the stored light field in the photon-echo quantum memory based on the use of arbitrary initial inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line. We show that the rephasing mechanism can exploit all resonant atoms, thereby maximally increasing an optical depth of the resonant transition, which is one of the critical parameters for the realization of highly efficient quantum memory. We also demonstrate that the rephasing mechanism can be used for various realizations of the photon-echo quantum memory, thereby creating many possibilities for its practical realization.
