On the interference between overlapping autoionisation lines

Abstract

The conditions under which interference effects may appear in the decay spectrum of coherently excited overlapping initial states are considered. It is demonstrated that interference effects are excluded under such experimental conditions as those reported in a recent study of the autoionisation spectrum of sodium.

Radiative decay of autoionising states in a strong field

Radiative decay of autoionising states in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field has been considered. The photon spectrum exhibits two peaks, the widths of which are much larger than the radiative ones.

Coherence and correlation in electron impact autoionisation of neon and argon

J P van den Brink, Peter N. den Outer, J. van Eck +1 more

The authors present experimental data on the autoionisation of neon and argon excited by electron impact. The energy of the incident electrons is chosen such that the two outgoing electrons in the final state have comparable energies. In this energy region state-state coherences and post-collision interactions (PCI) between the two electrons may be observed. Examples of observations of state-state interferences are presented and the effect of PCI in these experiments is discussed. A detailed analysis of the measurements is complicated due to the presence of overlapping neighbouring states.

Effects of Quantum Interference on the Profile of Excitation Spectra in the Atomic Sodium D_1

Li Yongfang, Xiangyang Zhang, Jianfeng Sun +5 more

In this paper, an experiment in a sodium vapor cell with cw laser pumping is reported. Two dips in the excitation spectrum profile of the sodium Di line are observed. Theoretically excitation spectra in the three-level system are calculated in detail and results are identical with experiments. It is demonstrated that the appearance of the two dips in the excitation spectrum is close connected with quantum interference effect.

Interference effects in photon emission excited in collisions between identical atoms

Gerard Nienhuis

The author evaluates interference effects arising in the photon emission excited by collisions between identical atoms. The general cause of the interference is the coherent superposition of radiation emitted by either one of the atoms. The author briefly discusses the relevance of these effects in several experimental situations of practical interest.

Interference Between Coherent Emissions in the Measurement of Atomic Lifetimes

J. H. Macek

It is pointed out that the (zero-field) oscillations seen in the decay curves for atoms excited by beam-foil collisions may be due to interference of light from different fine-structure levels; the interference can only be seen, however, if light of different polarizations is detected with different sensitivity.
