Controllability of quantum systems with switching control

Abstract

This article focuses on wavefunction controllability of a class of quantum systems with switching control. First, we present a specific quantum system which is not wavefunction controllable under the action of any one of two controllers with different fixed structures. However, we prove that the system is wavefunction controllable if the control input is allowed to switch between the two controllers. Then we present a sufficient condition for wavefunction controllability of a class of quantum systems with switching control and briefly discuss the problem of control design for such quantum control systems. Finally, two illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate a possible control design process for the proposed method.

Calculations of the controllability Lie algebra for spin quantum systems

Wang Men

Controllability of dynamical systems is a fundamental problem for both classical control as well as quantum control. This paper focuses on investigating the controllability Lie algebra of single-spin and two spin quantum systems.Firstly, based on the equivalent controllability conditions of quantum systems, some general necessary and sufficient conditions related to the basis coefficients are obtained by computing Lie brackets of Hamiltonian operators for single-spin quantum systems.Secondly, the matrix basis of Lie algebra su(4) is generated by Cartan decomposition.Using the matrix basis and employing the controllability theorem of quantum system,a calculation method of multiple Lie brackets for the Hamiltonian operators and a controllability criterion of quantum systems are also put forward in this article.

Indirect controllability and indirect observability of quantum mechanical systems

Domenico D’Alessandro, Raffaele Romano

In many experiments, a target quantum mechanical system is controlled and-or measured indirectly using an auxiliary quantum system. In the case of control, this means that the control action only affects the auxiliary system while the evolution of the target system is affected indirectly through the interaction with the auxiliary system. In the case of measurement, only the state of the auxiliary system can be measured, providing information on the initial state of the target system. Indirect controllability is the property of the target system of being driven between two arbitrary states while indirect observability refers to the possibility of extracting all the information on the state of the target system by measuring the auxiliary system. This paper has three main goals. First, we summarize recent notions and results introduced by us on the study of indirect controllability. Then, we present some new technical results on indirect controllability. In particular, we present a counterexample to the converse of a criterion for indirect controllability, which shows that the Lie algebraic condition introduced in this criterion is necessary but not sufficient for indirect controllability. This gives an open problem which is how to strengthen this condition to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for indirect controllability. Lastly, we present a parallel treatment of indirect observability, give the relevant notions and definitions and relate the properties of indirect controllability and observability. Our final result says that strong notions of indirect controllability and observability are equivalent properties to complete controllability of the system. We discuss examples of physical systems which are controlled and-or measured indirectly. The research is motivated by experimental schemes of current interest

Controllable Subsystems of Quantum Dynamical Systems

Mingyi Zhang, Hui Dai, G.-H. Dong +2 more

This paper proposes the concept of subsystem controllability for both closed and open quantum dynamical systems, and the existence conditions of controllable subsystems are derived accordingly. It is demonstrated that a controllable subsystem may exist for a closed quantum dynamical system even if the overall system is not controllable. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that, for a class of decoherence-free subsystems of Markovian open quantum dynamical systems, the subsystems are controllable under open-loop coherent control if the initial states of the open systems are factorized. To a certain extent, this paper gives an alternative control theoretical interpretation on why decoherence-free subsystems are useful for quantum computation.

Indirect control with quantum accessor: coherent control by initial state preparation

Hang Dong, Liu, X. F., H. C. Fu +1 more

This is the second one in our series of papers on indirect quantum control assisted by quantum accessor. In this paper we propose and study a new class of indirect quantum control(IDQC) scheme based on the initial states preparation of the accessor. In the present scheme, after the initial state of the accessor is properly prepared, the system is controlled by repeatedly switching on and off the interaction between the system and the accessor. This is different from the protocol of our first paper, where we manipulate the interaction between the controlled system and the accessor. We prove the controllability of the controlled system for the proposed indirect control scheme. Furthermore, we give an example with two coupled spins qubits to illustrate the scheme, the concrete control process and the controllability.

Coherent $H^{\infty}$ Control for Linear Quantum Systems With Uncertainties in the Interaction Hamiltonian

Chengdi Xiang, Shan Ma, Sen Kuang +1 more

This work conducts robust H∞analysis for a class of quantum systems subject to perturbations in the interaction Hamiltonian. A necessary and sufficient condition for the robustly strict bounded real property of this type of uncertain quantum system is proposed. This paper focuses on the study of coherent robust H∞controller design for quantum systems with uncertainties in the interaction Hamiltonian. The desired controller is connected with the uncertain quantum system through direct and indirect couplings. A necessary and sufficient condition is provided to build a connection between the robust H∞control problem and the scaled H∞control problem. A numerical procedure is provided to obtain coefficients of a coherent controller. An example is presented to illustrate the controller design method.
