Optical bistability in reflection from multilayer metal-dielectric structure with Kerr nonlinearity

Svitlana G. Ilchenko, Ruslan A. Lymarenko, V. B. Taranenko

Both static and dynamic characteristics of light reflected from a specially designed multilayer metal-dielectric structure with Kerr nonlinearity have been studied in this work. Various regimes of nonlinear reflection from the structure have been demonstrated, including bistable switching between low and high reflection states, which occurs at low intensity of the incident light due to a significant enhancement in the optical field in the nonlinear layer under conditions of total internal reflection. This nonlinear structure has been proposed to use as an optically controlled intracavity laser modulator.

Giant Goos–Hänchen shift via spontaneous generated coherence

Ziauddin Ziauddin

The influence of spontaneous generated coherence (SGC) on the Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift in the reflected light is presented. A weak probe light is incident on a cavity containing three-level gaseous atomic medium consist of 85Rb atoms. The atom–field interaction follows electromagnetically induced transparency configuration, and the SGC modifies the dispersion and absorption properties of a system [Y. Niu and S. Gong, Phys. Rev. A 73, 053811 (2006)]. The SGC enhances the Kerr nonlinearity which leads to giant negative and positive GH shifts in the reflected light. Further, the control of negative and positive GH shifts is achieved via manipulation of probe field detuning.

Study of Goos–Hänchen shifts of partially coherent light fields using a triple quantum dot system in the presence of giant Kerr nonlinearity

Muqaddar Abbas, Sajid Qamar

The coherent coupling between three quantum dots via tunneling fields leads to double tunneling-induced transparency and giant Kerr nonlinearity with vanishing absorption. This creates the possibility to achieve self-phase modulation in semiconductor nanostructures via controllable tunneling under the conditions of low light levels. As a result, a considerably high refractive index can be obtained. We suggest an intracavity medium which consists of triple quantum dot molecules to control the Goos–Hänchen (GH) shifts in the reflected light. For a suitable design of a triple quantum dot system, our results show that relatively large positive and negative GH shifts are achievable, without significant distortion, using partially coherent incident light fields.
