ADIABATIC TRANSPORT PROPERTIES AND BERRY’S PHASE IN HEISENBERG-ISING RING

Abstract

In a recent paper, B. Sutherland and B.S. Shastry have constructed an adiabatic process for the Heisenberg spin chain (spin ½) with respect to a change of boundary conditions. In this paper we calculate Berry’s phase for this process. We also evaluate the dependence of energy levels on boundary conditions which permits us to calculate the effective charge-carrying mass.

Twisted boundary conditions and the adiabatic ground state for the attractiveXXZLuttinger liquid

Naichang Yu, Michael Fowler

The one-dimensional attractive lattice fermion gas equivalent to the Heisenberg-Ising spin-1/2 chain is studied for a ring geometry threaded by magnetic flux. We find that for charged fermions having interaction strength \ensuremath{\Delta}=cos(\ensuremath{\pi}/p) with p noninteger, the adiabatic ground state is periodic in the magnetic flux threading the chain, with period two flux quanta, as found by Shastry and Sutherland for the repulsive case. We find that, at particular values of the threading field, a sequence of initially zero-energy bound states form at the Fermi surface during the adiabatic process, the largest containing [p] (the integer part of p) fermions. This largest bound state moves rapidly around to the other Fermi point where it sequentially unbinds. We find Berry's phase for the whole process to be [p]\ensuremath{\pi}. For p integer, as \ensuremath{\Phi} increases, eventually all the particles in the system go into bound states of size [p]. The period in this case is of order the size of the system. The charge-carrying mass of the fermions is calculated by finding the energy of the adiabatic ground state with twisted boundary conditions.

Adiabatic Ground-State Properties of Spin Chains with Twisted Boundary Conditions

Takahiro Fukui, Norio Kawakami

We study the Heisenberg spin chain with twisted boundary conditions, focusing on the adiabatic flow of the energy spectrum as a function of the twist angle. In terms of effective field theory for the nearest-neighbor model, we show that the period 2 (in unit $2π$) obtained by Sutherland and Shastry arises from irrelevant perturbations around the massless fixed point, and that this period may be rather general for one-dimensional interacting lattice models at half filling. In contrast, the period for the Haldane-Shastry spin model with $1/r^2$ interaction has a different and unique origin for the period, namely, it reflects fractional statistics in Haldane's sense.

THE GEOMETRICAL PROPERTIES OF BERRY’S PHASE

Using the spectral decomposition of the Hamiltonian, we clarify the relationship of Berry’s effect with the parallel transport in the parameter space of this Hamiltonian. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions under which this parallel transport is described by a natural, Riemannian connection. The considerations are illustrated by several examples.

Twisted boundary conditions and effective mass in Heisenberg-Ising and Hubbard rings

B. Sriram Shastry, Bill Sutherland

We identify the boundary energy of a many-body system of fermions on a lattice under twisted boundary conditions as the inverse of the effective charge-carrying mass, or the stiffness, renormalizing nontrivially under interactions due to the absence of Galilean invariance. We point out that this quantity is a sensitive and direct probe of the metal-insulator transitions possible in these systems, i.e., the Mott-Hubbard transition or Density-wave formation. We calculate exactly the stiffness, or the effective mass, in the 1D Heisenberg-Ising ring and the 1D Hubbard model by using the ansatz of Bethe. For the Hubbard ring we also calculate a spin stiffness by extending the nested ansatz of Bethe-Yang to this case.
