Abstract

The lifetimes of the 5s6p and 5s7p excited singlet P levels of strontium have been measured using the Hanle effect of the 2932 and 2574 Å transitions to the 5s21S0 level. These lifetimes are compared with those reported previously using the same technique in the 7169 and 5331 Å transitions to the metastable 5s4d1D2 level. The dependence of lifetime on the density of the scattering atoms in the coherence narrowing region has also been determined.

Lifetimes and Oscillator Strengths in Singlet Levels of Strontium

F. M. Kelly, T. K. Koh, M. S. Mathur

Coherence narrowing and collision broadening of the 5s5p1P1 level of strontium have been studied. The natural lifetime of this level has been determined to be 4.68 ± 0.10 ns. The oscillator strength of the 4607 Å transition is 1.94 ± 0.06, and the f values of the transitions from the 5s6p, 5s7p, and 5s8p1P1 levels to the ground level and the 5s4d1D2 metastable level have been reevaluated. The cross section for Sr–Sr collisions is found to be [Formula: see text].

The density dependence of the Hanle effect in the resonance line of atomic barium

F. M. Kelly, M. S. Mathur

The change in the Hanle effect of the singlet resonance line of neutral barium has been studied over a wide range of density. The low density region has been used to confirm a lifetime of 8.37 ± 0.08 ns for the 6s6p1P1 level. We have determined the cross sections for the relaxation of the multipole moment of order 2 for collisions of the excited level with the ground level and with the metastable 6s5d1D2 level, and comparisons are made with the measured value of [Formula: see text] for the ground level with theoretical predictions.

Lifetime of the 6s6p1P1 level of barium

L. O. Dickie, F. M. Kelly

The lifetime of the first excited singlet P level of barium, 6s6p1P1, has been determined from the width of the zero field level crossing, i.e. the Hanle effect, of the 6s6p1P1 –6s21S0, 5535 Å resonance line. The resonance radiation was produced in a hollow cathode lamp and the scattering atoms by an atomic beam. After taking account of coherence narrowing, the lifetime is determined to be 8.37 ± 0.14 × 10−9 s, in good agreement with other recent work.

Hanle effect in the singlet excited states of the alkaline earths

F. M. Kelly, M. S. Mathur

The Hanle effect in the singlet states of Sr, Ba, Mg, and Ca has been studied over a range of densities. The low density observations lead to an accurate lifetime measurement of the singlet excited levels, and calculation of the related oscillator strengths. The depolarization cross sections, [Formula: see text], for collision with ground level neutral atoms have been obtained from the high density data.

The density dependence of the Hanle effect in the resonance line of atomic magnesium

F. M. Kelly, M. S. Mathur

The Hanle width and hence the lifetime of the first excited 1P1 level of neutral magnesium have been measured over a wide range of densities. The natural lifetime of the 3s3p1P1 level is 2.00 ns. The depolarization cross section for collisions with the ground level neutral atom has been measured and [Formula: see text].

Hanle Effect in 2P1 Helium

Edward S. Fry, W. Williams

The oscillator strength for the resonance ($1^{1}S\ensuremath{-}2^{1}P$) transition in atomic helium has been determined from a measurement of the lifetime of the $2^{1}P$ state. This lifetime was obtained using a modified zero-field level crossing (Hanle) method. The scattering sample was a thermal velocity beam of $2^{1}S$ metastable atoms. Resonant 2-\ensuremath{\mu} ($2^{1}S\ensuremath{-}2^{1}P$) radiation is absorbed by the $2^{1}S$ atoms, which are excited to the $2^{1}P$ state. This state then primarily decays to the ground $1^{1}S$ state with the emission of resonance (584 \AA{}) radiation. The lifetime of the $2^{1}P$ state was determined from measurements of the magnetic-field dependence of the angular distribution of the 584 \AA{} intensity. This new technique eliminates the problem of constructing a vacuum ultraviolet resonance lamp. The measured lifetime $\ensuremath{\tau} (2^{1}P)$ is (5.63 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.22) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$ sec. The resulting absorption oscillator strength for the resonance transition is 0.273 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.011. This oscillator strength agrees with the theoretical value.
