Wavefront reversal in stimulated scattering of two-frequency pump radiation

Abstract

The quasioptic approximation is used to study the influence of pump radiation nonmonochromaticity on the spatial and angular characteristics of the scattered radiation. It is shown that the temporal noncoherence may greatly distort the angular spectrum of the Stokes component of the scattered radiation, compared with the case of monochromatic pumping.

Investigation of the forward and backward scattering of spatially noncoherent pump radiation

I Yu Anikeev, A. A. Gordeev, Iosif G. Zubarev +1 more

A new method developed by the authors for the analysis of stimulated scattering of spatially noncoherent radiation is used in a comparative study of the concurrent and opposed interactions of a Stokes field with pump radiation. If there is no correlation between the Stokes and pump waves, the interaction is independent of the relative direction of propagation of the waves. However, if the Stokes and pump waves are correlated, the interaction efficiency depends strongly on the relative directions of the waves. Exact expressions are obtained for the structure of the wave fields and gain increments in the backscattering case and approximate expressions are obtained for the forward scattering. The physical reason for the asymmetry in the amplification is the reproduction by the Stokes signal spectrum of the pump spectrum in the forward scattering case and inversion of this spectrum in the backscattering case. The same reason accounts for a deterioration of the quality of wavefront reversal in the backscattering case compared with the forward scattering.

Theory of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, O. I. Rechkin

A theory is developed of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation whose spectral width is much greater than the spontaneous scattering line width or the frequency shift of the Stokes wave. It is shown that scattering of nonmonochromatic incident radiation under coherent conditions may take place as efficiently as for monochromatic pump radiation. The results apply to various types of stimulated scattering, in particular, to stimulated thermal scattering and stimulated scattering in media which are in thermodynamic nonequilibrium.

Influence of saturation on the quality of wavefront reversal in the case of stimulated scattering of spatially inhomogeneous pump radiation

I Yu Anikeev, Iosif G. Zubarev, С И Михайлов

A theoretical investigation is made of stimulated scattering of spatially inhomogeneous radiation under saturation conditions. A system of kinetic equations describing the interaction between the pump radiation and Stokes waves, correlated and uncorrelated with the exciting field, is derived and solved. A quantitative criterion is derived for the quality of wavefront reversal in the case of generation of Stokes radiation from the spontaneous noise and also in the case of a "Brillouin" amplifier.

Influence of spatial and temporal noncoherence of the pump radiation on the Stokes signal amplification

Iosif G. Zubarev, A B Mironov, С И Михайлов

An experimental investigation was made of the interaction of a narrow-band Stokes signal with a nonmonochromatic pump wave for different angles θ sp between the two interacting waves. The efficiency of conversion fell strongly on increase of the angle θ sp because of the spatial noncoherence of the pump wave. It was found experimentally that at sufficiently high values of the angle θ sp the critical intensity ceased to depend on the width of the pump line.

Stimulated scattering of nonmonochromator spatially inhomogeneous radiation

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, E M Zemskov

A theoretical analysis is made of the wavefront reconstruction and reversal of nonmonochromatic radiation in stimulated scattering. It is shown that several wavefront reconstruction or reversal conditions are possible for nonmonochromatic excitation. Expressions are obtained for the scattered field amplitudes. The effect of the type of time dependence of the exciting radiation on the character of the wavefront reconstruction or reversal effect is analyzed.

Accuracy of wavefront reversal in stimulated scattering with a frequency and angular shift

Boris Ya Zel'dovich, M A Orlova

An analysis is made of distortions of the reversed wave in stimulated backscattering of light (backward WFR) caused by frequency and angular shifts of the scattered wave relative to the pump wave. The scattered field is expressed in the form of a series in terms of orthogonalized specklons comprising the reversed pump field and its transverse derivatives. It is found that for backward WFR with a frequency detuning Δω, the Stokes field ES(r, z) is not closest to the pump field E*L (r, z) to a field in the shifted plane E*L (r, z + Δz), where Δz=2Δω/Δg, g is the gain. Similar results are also obtained for an angular shift.
