New complete parameterizations for two related classes of linear quantum stochastic systems

Abstract

This paper presents a novel characterization of completely passive linear quantum stochastic systems solely in terms of the controllability Gramian of such systems. Importantly, exploiting this result, we establish a connection between the class of completely passive systems and the class of linear quantum stochastic systems with a pure Gaussian steady state. Consequently, we obtain a new complete parameterization for the class of systems generating a pure Gaussian steady state. Examples are provided to illustrate our results.

On the Quasi-Balanceable Class of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

Onvaree Techakesari, Hendra I. Nurdin

This paper concerns the recently proposed quasi-balanced truncation model reduction method for linear quantum stochastic systems. It has previously been shown that the quasi-balanceable class of systems (i.e. systems that can be truncated via the quasi-balanced method) includes the class of completely passive systems. In this work, we refine the previously established characterization of quasi-balanceable systems and show that the class of quasi-balanceable systems is strictly larger than the class of completely passive systems. In particular, we derive a novel characterization of completely passive linear quantum stochastic systems solely in terms of the controllability Gramian of such systems. Exploiting this result, we prove that all linear quantum stochastic systems with a pure Gaussian steady-state (active systems included) are all quasi-balanceable, and establish a new complete parameterization for this important class of systems. Examples are provided to illustrate our results.

On Synthesis of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems by Pure Cascading

Hendra I. Nurdin

Recently, it has been demonstrated that an arbitrary linear quantum stochastic system can be realized as a cascade connection of simpler one degree of freedom quantum harmonic oscillators together with a direct interaction Hamiltonian which is bilinear in the canonical operators of the oscillators. However, from an experimental point of view, realizations by pure cascading, without a direct interaction Hamiltonian, would be much simpler to implement and this raises the natural question of what class of linear quantum stochastic systems are realizable by cascading alone. This technical note gives a precise characterization of this class of linear quantum stochastic systems and then it is proved that, in the weaker sense of transfer function realizability, all passive linear quantum stochastic systems belong to this class. A constructive example is given to show the transfer function realization of a two degrees of freedom passive linear quantum stochastic system by pure cascading.

Pure Gaussian state generation via dissipation: a quantum stochastic differential equation approach

Naoki Yamamoto

Recently, the complete characterization of a general Gaussian dissipative system having a unique pure steady state was obtained. This result provides a clear guideline for engineering an environment such that the dissipative system has a desired pure steady state such as a cluster state. In this paper, we describe the system in terms of a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) so that the environment channels can be explicitly dealt with. Then, a physical meaning of that characterization, which cannot be seen without the QSDE representation, is clarified; more specifically, the nullifier dynamics of any Gaussian system generating a unique pure steady state is passive. In addition, again based on the QSDE framework, we provide a general and practical method to implement a desired dissipative Gaussian system, which has a structure of quantum state transfer.

On balanced realization of linear quantum stochastic systems and model reduction by quasi-balanced truncation

Hendra I. Nurdin

This paper derives conditions under which co-diagonalization of the controllability and observability Gramians can be performed in a physically consistent manner for the class of linear quantum stochastic systems that are common in the fields of quantum optics and related areas like quantum nano- and optomechanical systems. Such a class is essentially a quantum analogue of classical (non-quantum) linear stochastic systems. However, unlike their classical counterparts, the laws of quantum mechanics impose nonlinear equality constraints on the system matrices of linear quantum stochastic systems, the so-called physical realizability constraints. Therefore, a meaningful model reduction procedure must yield a physically realizable reduced model satisfying these constraints. Previous work has shown that model reduction by subsystem truncation preserves physical realizability, but did not propose a method for truncating a subsystem. One candidate approach for this truncation is a quantum adaptation of the well-known balanced truncation method for classical linear time-invariant systems. It is shown in this paper that balanced realization for linear quantum stochastic systems is only possible under a strongly restrictive necessary and sufficient condition. However, the paper also derives less restrictive necessary and sufficient conditions for other realizations with simultaneously diagonal controllability and observability Gramians, and introduces the notion of a quasi-balanced realization. An example of the application of the results is provided to demonstrate quasi-balanced truncation in the linear quantum stochastic setting.

A Complete Characterization of Passive Unitary Normalizable (PUN) Gaussian States

Tiju Cherian John, Hemant K. Mishra, Saikat Guha

We provide a complete characterization of the class of multimode quantum Gaussian states that can be reduced to a tensor product of thermal states using only a passive unitary operator. We call these states passive unitary normalizable (PUN) Gaussian states. The characterization of PUN Gaussian states is given in three different ways: ($i$) in terms of their covariance matrices, (ii) using gauge-invariance (a special class of Glauber-Sudarshan p-functions), and (iii) with respect to the recently obtained$(A,\ \Lambda)$parametrization of Gaussian states in [J. Math. Phys. 62, 022102 (2021)]. In terms of the covariance matrix, our characterization states that an n-mode quantum Gaussian state is PUN if and only if its$2n\times 2n$quantum covariance matrix$S_{\mathrm{T}\mathfrak{i}}$is skew-Hamiltonian, i.e., it commutes with the standard symplectic matrix,$\left[\begin{array}{cc} 0 & I_n \\ -I_n & 0 \end{array}\right]$, with$I_{n}$being the$nxn$identity matrix. It is well-known that the so-called gauge-invariant Gaussian states are PUN, but whether the converse is true is not known in the literature to the best of our knowledge. We establish the converse in affirmation. Lastly, in terms of the$(A,\ \Lambda)$-parameterization, we show that a Gaussian state with parameters$(A,\ \Lambda)$is PUN if and only if$A=0$
