Abstract

Energy transfer and exciton population dynamics in a two-quantum dot system coupled with a phonon heat-bath system are examined using the density matrix formalism. In such a system, optical near-field interactions induce energy transfer between quantum dots, and exciton–phonon interactions guarantee the unidirectional excitation energy transfer. Our theoretical investigation shows that the population dynamics change drastically depending on the coupling strengths due to optical near-field interactions and exciton–phonon heat-bath interactions. The temperature effect promotes frequent energy back-transfer from the heat-bath to the quantum dot system. Applying our theoretical formulation, we numerically calculate the time evolution of populations, and estimate energy transfer time or state-filling time for a CuCl quantum dot system. The estimated time is suitable for the elements in our proposed optical nano-switch and nano-photonic devices.

Excitation dynamics in a three‐quantum dot system driven by optical near‐field interaction: towards a nanometric photonic device

Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Suguru Sangu, Akira Shojiguchi +3 more

Using density operator formalism, we discuss interdot excitation energy transfer dynamics driven by the optical near-field and phonon bath reservoir, as well as coherent excitation dynamics of a quantum dot system. As an effective interaction between quantum dots induced by the optical near-field, the projection operator method gives a renormalized dipole interaction, which is expressed as a sum of the Yukawa functions and is used as the optical near-field coupling of quantum dots. We examine one- and two-exciton dynamics of a three-quantum dot system suggesting a nanometric photonic switch, and numerically obtain a transfer time comparable with the recent experimental results for CuCl quantum dots.

Dynamics of elastic and inelastic energy transfer between quantum dots in a microcavity

Kaijie Xu, Carlo Piermarocchi

We develop a theory of exciton energy transfer dynamics between two quantum dots in a planar microcavity. We study the dynamics of quantum dot excitons in three different cases: (i) a single dot coupled only to cavity modes, (ii) two dots coupled to cavity modes, and (iii) two dots coupled to cavity modes and to acoustic phonons. In the latter case, we focus on the process of phonon-assisted inelastic exciton energy transfer between the quantum dots. We take into account phonon effects by introducing a light-matter Hamiltonian with operators describing the exciton-photon-phonon coupling and we truncate the Hilbert space by assuming that at most one excitation is present in the system. Using this approach we simulate the exciton dynamics with realistic parameters in the zero temperature limit. From the dynamics we extract the dependence of the characteristic energy transfer rate as a function of the interdot separation. This theoretical approach can be used to optimize exciton energy transfer by designing structures with engineered photon and phonon density of states.

Controlled exciton transfer between quantum dots with acoustic phonons taken into account

Pavel A. Golovinski

A system of excitons in two quantum dots coupled by the dipole–dipole interaction is investigated. The excitation transfer process controlled by the optical Stark effect at nonresonant frequencies is considered and the effect of the interaction between excitons and acoustic phonons in a medium on this process is taken into account. The system evolution is described using quantum Heisenberg equations. A truncated set of equations is obtained and the transfer dynamics is numerically simulated. High-efficiency picosecond switching of the excitation transfer by a laser pulse with a rectangular envelope is demonstrated. The dependence of picosecond switching on the quantum-dot parameters and optical-pulse length is presented.

Logic and functional operations using a near-field optically coupled quantum-dot system

Suguru Sangu, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Akira Shojiguchi +1 more

This paper investigates the exciton dynamics in a three-quantum-dot system coupled via an optical near field. The system consists of two identical quantum dots coupled coherently (the coherent operation part) and a third quantum dot with exciton sublevels (the output part). It provides certain characteristic functional operations depending on the initial excitation, as well as symmetry of the coupling strengths or the spatial arrangement. First, we analytically obtain the coupling strength between two quantum dots via an optical near field and give a numerical estimation for a CuCl quantum-cube system. Then, a resonance condition between the two parts is shown; this depends on the initial excitation in the coherent operation part. Using this condition, which can be realized by adjusting the energy level of a quantum dot in the output part, AND- and XOR-logic operations can be demonstrated in a symmetrically arranged quantum-dot system. We also discuss how the asymmetry of the system affects the energy transfer through certain coupled states in the coherent operation part that would be forbidden in a symmetrically arranged system. Although the asymmetry degrades the signal contrast for logic operations, it is expected to open up new techniques for novel device technologies where quantum entangled states are mediated in the operations.

Förster Blockade and Excitation Transfer Behaviors of Two-Photon Rabi Oscillations of Exciton–Biexciton Levels in Coupled Quantum Dots

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We provide a theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-photon Rabi oscillations in two coupled quantum dots. Each dot is a three-level quantum system (ground, one-exciton, and biexciton states). We describe the optical dynamics within the density matrix formalism framework. The two-photon Rabi oscillations are found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interdot dipolar interaction. Using a detuned laser pulse with an exciton state of the driven quantum dot in our numerical simulations, a direct coherent excitation between the biexciton states can be established, but whether Rabi oscillations can be observed depend mainly on the strength of the dipolar interaction and bandwidth of the excitation laser. When the strength of the dipolar coupling is less than the excitation laser bandwidth, the time-dependent populations of the various two biexciton states of the system exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. However, as we increase the dipolar coupling strength, the population transfer between the quantum dots levels amazingly becomes forbidden, and the excitation gets trapped at the initial state. The reduction of the influence of the dipolar interaction leads to a manipulation of two-photon Rabi oscillation in an ultrashort timescale (∼ps), opening possibilities to achieve ultrafast quantum state control and quantum logic gate generation.

Efficient population transfer in a quantum dot exciton under phonon-induced decoherence via shortcuts to adiabaticity

Spyridon G. Kosionis, Sutirtha Biswas, Christina Fouseki +2 more

In the present study, we apply shortcut to adiabaticity pulses (time-dependent Rabi frequency and detuning) for the efficient population transfer from the ground to the exciton state in a GaAs/InGaAs quantum dot with phonon-induced dephasing. We use the time-evolving matrix product operator (TEMPO) method to propagate system in time and find that, for temperatures below $ 20 \ \text{K} $ and pulse duration up to $ 10 \ \text{ps} $, a very good transfer efficiency is obtained in general. We explain these results using a Bloch-like equation derived from a generalized Lindblad equation, which adequately describes system dynamics at lower temperatures. For higher temperatures, the transfer efficiency is significantly reduced except for subpicosecond pulses, where the shortcut Rabi frequency reduces to a delta pulse attaining a fast population inversion. The present work is expected to find application in quantum technologies which exploit quantum dots for single-photon generation on demand.
