Unusual three-photon ionization of magnesium atoms using a XeCl excimer laser

S. L. Chin, W. Xiong, K. X. He +1 more

Multiphoton ionization of Mg was studied with an excimer laser (XeCl, λ = 308 nm). The laser-intensity dependence of the number of ions indicates that the lowest-order two-photon process, which has enough energy to reach the first ionization limit, fails to dominate the ionization of Mg. The slope is 3 when a low-enough extracting field is applied and increases with the latter. A three-photon resonance with some autoionizing states is proposed as a partial explanation of this abnormal phenomenon, but the variation of the slope of the log N versus log I curve as a function of a dc electric field remains unexplained.

Effects of uniform dc electric fields on multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms

Cornelius E. Klots, R. N. Compton

Multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms shows pronounced two-photon resonances at the nd states and, to a much smaller extent, at the ns states. A dc electric field augments the ns resonances and, for a complementary reason, induces resonances at the np and nf levels. A scaling law for field-induced signals, as a function of principal quantum number, is reported. Field ionization of high Rydberg states is also conveniently studied and quantified with our technique.

Multiphoton ionization of Na and K in a modest electric field

Y. Teraoka, Yuuki Sato, J. Murakami

Multiphoton ionization (MPI) via two-photon resonance with high-lying Rydberg levels is observed on Na and K atoms in modest (12--120 V/cm) dc electric fields. The field-induced MPI signals are manifested to such an extent that the nominally forbidden MPI via two-photon resonance with the np levels is induced at the same signal levels as or more intensely than the allowed MPI via the ns and nd Rydberg levels. The intensity inversion between the allowed and the forbidden MPI signals is observed on the K atoms in the wavelength region where the two-photon energy is very close to the field-ionization limit.

Multiphoton ionization and second harmonic generation (SHG) via two-photon forbidden 3s21S-3snp1P(n=16-21) resonance in Mg vapor have been observed and studied tn the presence of a DC electric field and were interpreted as 1-mixing of Rydberg states caused by external electric field. The experimental results are in agreement with theoretical explanation.

Single-photon double ionization of negative hydrogen ions in the presence of a dc electric field

Igor A. Ivanov, Anatoli S. Kheifets

We present an accurate numerical study of the influence an the external dc electric field on the process of single-photon double ionization of the negative hydrogen ion at photon energies from the threshold to $30\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. We demonstrate that the presence of an external dc electric field of the order of $0.005\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{a.u.}$ may considerably alter the cross section of the process.

Multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone

The most important results of study of multiphoton ionization of atoms are reviewed. Discussions are presented of specific features of the process, theoretical methods of description of ionization of atoms in a strong light field, the basic principles of design of experiments in which intense laser radiation is used, results of investigation of direct and resonance processes of multiphoton ionization, and the mutual relation between multiphoton processes (multiphoton excitation and ionization) and various phenomena leading to perturbation of the spectrum of bound states of an electron in an atom under the influence of a strong light field.
