Abstract

We have used the method of quantum tomography to reconstruct the Wigner function of squeezed light generated from a laser beam having interacted with cold atoms. The photon number distribution has been investigated showing features of squeezed states.

A Gallery of Quantum States: Tomography of Nonclassical Light

J. Mlynek, Gerd Breitenbach, and S. Schiller

The complete family of squeezed states of a continuous-wave mode pair of the electromagnetic field was generated and analyzed by tomographical methods. Wigner functions, photon number distributions, density matrices, and phase distributions were reconstructed with high accuracy. Features such as photon number oscillations, sub- and super-Poissonian photon statistics, and bifurcations of the phase distribution were observed.

Homodyne tomography of classical and non-classical light

Gerd Breitenbach, Stephan Schiller

States with explicit quantum character, such as squeezed vacuum and bright squeezed light, as well as coherent states and incoherent superpositions of coherent states were generated and analysed by tomographical methods. Wigner functions, photon-number distributions, density matrices and phase distributions were reconstructed with high accuracy. Features such as photon number oscillations, sub-Poissonian and super-Poissonian photon statistics, bifurcations of the phase distribution, and loss of coherence were observed, demonstrating the usefulness of quantum state reconstruction as an analysing tool in quantum optics experiments.

Quantum polarization tomography of bright squeezed light

C R Müller, B. Stoklasa, Christian Peuntinger +7 more

We reconstruct the polarization sector of a bright polarization squeezed beam starting from a complete set of Stokes measurements. Given the symmetry that underlies the polarization structure of quantum fields, we use the unique SU(2) Wigner distribution to represent states. In the limit of localized bright states, the Wigner function can be approximated by an inverse three-dimensional Radon transform. We compare this direct reconstruction with the results of a maximum likelihood estimation, thus finding excellent agreement.

Non-Gaussian statistics from individual pulses of squeezed light

We describe the experimental observation of a degaussification protocol, mapping individual femtosecond pulses of squeezed light onto non-Gaussian states by using only simple linear optical elements. The Wigner function is reconstructed using quantum tomography.

We present a self-homodyne tomography experiment for the reconstruction of the Wigner of an amplitude squeezed state generated by a semiconductor laser. We discuss in particular the topic of the reconstruction algorithm and the problem related to the adequate choice of the transformation kernel.

We introduce a framework for reconstructing the Hamiltonian of an unknown nonlinear quantum-optical process from measured Wigner functions of the generated light, retrieving the underlying interaction coefficients with high fidelity and robustness to noise.
