The two-level pairing model in the Schwinger representation

Abstract

The two-level pairing model was investigated in the framework of the Schwinger representation. It has been shown that zero-point fluctuations, which are important in the crossover region, are well described by certain coherent states which conserve the constants of motion. These so-called conserving approximations provide excellent descriptions of the ground-state energy and of the first excitation energy over the whole range of coupling constant values. The description of the ground-state energy provided by the Glauber coherent state is also reasonable, but not so good. Although the Glauber coherent state fails to provide the description of the excitation energy around the critical point, its performance in the strong coupling limit is very good both for the description of the ground-state energy and of the first excitation energy. The present results also show that already at the mean-field level, the bosonic description in the independent particle approximation incorporates important correlation corrections to the conventional mean-field description based on the fermionic realization of the su (2) algebra (BCS theory).

A new method for describing the two-level pairing model in a many-fermion system is presented. The basic idea comes from the Schwinger boson representation for the su(2) ⊗ su(2)-algebra, in which four kinds of boson operators govern the dynamics. It is well known that in the original fermion space, it is almost impossible to introduce any trial state for the variation except the BCS state in the framework of the mean field approximation. However, in the Schwinger boson representation, various trial states can be defined on the condition that the mean field approximation is useful. In these states, the su(2) ⊗ su(1,1)-coherent state is mainly discussed in this paper.

A Refined Numerical Result on the First Excitation Energy in the Two-Level Pairing Model

Yasuhiko Tsue, Constança Providência

The first excitation energy in the two-level pairing model is investigated in terms of the equilibrium and the small fluctuation around it. The basic idea is an extension of results presented in a previous paper by the present authors. In this investigation, the result obtained in the previous paper plays a central role: At the limit of the weak and the strong interaction strength, the results are in good agreement with the exact one. The former and the latter are calculated in the framework of the su(2) ⊗ su(1, 1)- and the su(2) ⊗ su(2)-coherent state, respectively. On the basis of the above conclusion, the intermediate region for the interaction strength is described in terms of the idea of the interpolation and it is shown that the agreement of the result with the exact one is quite good. 1 typeset using PTPTEX.cls 〈Ver.0.9 〉 The description of the first excited state in the two-level pairing model for the closed shell system has been regarded as a basic, but a modest problem in many-body physics. Classical and Quantal Descriptions of Small Amplitude Fluctuations around Equilibriums in the Two-Level Pairing Model

Y. Tsue, Constança Providência, João da Providência +1 more

Various classical counterparts to the two-level pairing model in a many-fermion system are presented in the Schwinger boson representation. It is shown that one of the key ingredients giving the classical descriptions for quantal systems is the use of various trial states in addition to the su(2) ⊗ su(2)-coherent state, which may be a natural selection for the two-level pairing model governed by the su(2) ⊗ su(2)-algebra. It is pointed out that a spurious behavior such as a sharp phase transition can be avoided by using the other states including the su(2) ⊗ su(1,1)- and su(1,1) ⊗ su(1,1)-coherent states. This contrasts with the situation regarding the usual Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and quasi-particle random phase approximations applied to the original fermion system, which yield a sharp phase transition.

Schwinger representation approach to the Lipkin model

Masatoshi Yamamura, Constança Providência, João da Providência +3 more

The Schwinger representation and the Marumori–Yamamura–Tokunaga boson expansion are used to describe the Lipkin model in terms of generalized coherent states. The groundstate, first excited state and RPA energies are obtained within several variant types of coherent states. It has been found that generalized coherent states defined in consonance with the parity symmetry of the model describe particularly well the transition from weak to strong coupling, providing a remarkable improvement of the mean-field description of the transition zone.

Schwinger-Type Boson Realization for the su(4) Algebra: In Relation to the Description of Many-Fermion Systems in Pairing Correlation

M. Yamamura, A. Kuriyama, Teiji Kunihiro

Considering the present situation of Lie-algebraic studies of high-temperature superconductivity, a Schwinger-type boson realization of the su(4) algebra is investigated. The basic framework comes from a possible form of the su(n) and the su(n,1) algebras in the Schwinger representation, which was recently proposed by two of the present authors (M. Y. & A. K.), together with J. da Providência. The form investigated in this paper is, in some sense, a natural extension of the Schwinger boson representation for the so(5), so(4) and su(2)⊗su(2) algebras, which was also proposed by the present authors. The orthogonal set for the irreducible representation of the su(4) algebra is completely analogous to that expressed in terms of fermion operators for pairing correlation.
