CROSSOVER FROM RABI TO JOSEPHSON DYNAMICS IN TWO-COUPLED BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES AS A PHASE TRANSITION PROCESS

Abstract

Crossover from individual Rabi dynamics to collective Josephson dynamics in two-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates is studied as a phase transition process. We obtain the critical value of the parameter Λ (ratio of the mean field energy to the tunneling matrix element) for the π-phase oscillations from the non-linear perturbation expansion of small oscillations around the saddle point of the first-order Euclidean (imaginary time) differential equations for polar and azimuthal angles θ and ϕ without approximation.

ENTANGLEMENT DYNAMICS OF FLUCTUATIONS IN TWO-MODE BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

P. L. Shu, L. C. Wang, X. X. Yi

The entanglement dynamics of fluctuations in two weakly coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied in this paper. By calculating the time evolution of entanglement between two fluctuations of condensates in a double-well potential, we show that the nonlinear tunneling transition can be reflected in the entanglement dynamics of fluctuations in BECs. This complements the study on the entanglement dynamics of BECs based on the mean-field approximation.

Rabi Oscillations in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates with a Coupling Drive

Weidong Li, Fan Wen-Bing, Xiaoji Zhou +2 more

The Rabi oscillations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with a coupling drive are studied by means of a pair of bosonic operators. The coupling drive and initial phase difference, will affect the amplitude and the period of the Rabi oscillations. The Rabi oscillations will vanish in the evolution of the condensate density for some special initial phase differences (phi = 0 or pi). Our theory provides not only an analytical framework for quantitative predictions for two-component condensates, but also gives ail intuitive understanding of some mysterious features observed in experiments and numerical simulations.

Rabi–Josephson oscillations and self-trapped dynamics in atomic junctions with two bosonic species

G. Mazzarella, Boris A. Malomed, Luca Salasnich +2 more

We investigate the dynamics of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates, composed of atoms in two distinct hyperfine states, which are linearly coupled by two-photon Raman transitions. The condensate is loaded into a double-well potential. A variety of dynamical behaviour, ranging from regular Josephson oscillations to mixed Rabi–Josephson oscillations and to regimes featuring increasing complexity are described in terms of a reduced Hamiltonian system with four degrees of freedoms, which are the numbers of atoms in each component in the left and right potential wells, whose canonically conjugate variables are phases of the corresponding wavefunctions. Using the system with four degrees of freedom, we study the dynamics of fractional imbalances of the two bosonic components and compare the results to direct simulations of the Gross–Pitaevskii equations describing the bosonic mixture. We perform this analysis when the fractional imbalance oscillates around a zero-time averaged value and in the self-trapping regime as well.

Phase-Diffusion Dynamics in Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Erez Boukobza, Maya Chuchem, Doron Cohen +1 more

We study the phase sensitivity of collisional phase diffusion between weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, using a semiclassical picture of the two-mode Bose-Hubbard model. When weak coupling is allowed, zero relative phase locking is attained in the Josephson-Fock transition regime, whereas a pi relative phase is only locked in Rabi-Josephson point. Our analytic semiclassical estimates agree well with the numerical results.

Temporal non-equilibrium dynamics of a Bose–Josephson junction in presence of incoherent excitations

Mauricio Trujillo-Martinez, Anna Posazhennikova, Johann Kroha

The time-dependent non-equilibrium dynamics of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) typically generates incoherent excitations out of the condensate due to the finite frequencies present in the time evolution. We present a detailed derivation of a general non-equilibrium Greenʼs function technique that describes the coupled time evolution of an interacting BEC and its single-particle excitations in a trap, based on an expansion in terms of the exact eigenstates of the trap potential. We analyze the dynamics of a Bose system in a small double-well potential with initially all particles in the condensate. When the trap frequency is larger than the Josephson frequency, , the dynamics changes at a characteristic time, , abruptly from the slow Josephson oscillations of the BEC to fast Rabi oscillations driven by quasiparticle excitations in the trap. For times , the Josephson oscillations are undamped, in agreement with the experiments. We analyze the physical origin of the finite scale as well as its dependence on the trap parameter Δ .

Collective dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Fang-Qi Hu, Jianjun Wang, Zi-Fa Yu +2 more

We study the collective dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled two pseudospin components of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic potential, by using variational and directly numerical approach of binary mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The results show that, because of strong coupling of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Rabi coupling, and atomic interaction, the collective dynamics of the system behave as complex characters. When the Rabi coupling is absent, the density profiles of the system preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do harmonic oscillations. The amplitude of the collective oscillations increases with SOC. Furthermore, when the SOC strength increases, the dipole oscillations of the two pseudospin components undergo a transition from in-phase to out-of-phase oscillations. When the Rabi coupling present, there will exist a critical value of SOC strength (which depends on the Rabi coupling and atomic interaction). If the SOC strength is less than this critical value, the density profiles of the system can preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do anharmonic (the frequency of dipole oscillations depends on SOC) oscillations synchronously (i.e., in-phase oscillations). However, if the SOC strength is larger than this critical value, the wave packets are dynamically fragmented and the stable dipole oscillations of the system can not exist. The collective dynamics of the system can be controlled by adjusting the atomic interaction, SOC, and Rabi-coupling strength.
