Observation of Collimated Atoms by Light Pressure Force in Absorption Cell

Abstract

Experimental observation of laser cooling and collimation of moving atoms in an absorption cell by light pressure force of an intense standing light wave field is reported. The hyper fine structure of atomic sodium has been observed due to the cooled and collimated atoms. The mechanism of laser cooling and collimation of atoms is discussed.

Two-dimensional radiative cooling of a beam of sodium atoms by radiation-pressure forces has been studied in an axisymmetric standing light wave. The temperature of the transverse motion of the atoms was reduced to 3.5 mK.

Laser Manipulation of Atoms and Atom Optics

In this paper experiments on laser cooling, collimation and manipulation of a sodium atomic beam, such as the transverse collimation and decollimation of an atomic beam by a standing wave or a misaligned standing wave, longitudinal cooling of an atomic beam by a diffuse light field, sub-Doppler cooling in a blue detuned standing wave, are reported. The basic concept on atom optics is developed. An experiment on a method for the injection of atoms into an atomic cavity is also discussed.

Optical pressure force in traveling and standing light waves during excitation of a multilevel atom by two-frequency laser radiation

An experimental investigation was made of the behavior of the optical pressure force created by the interaction of a two-frequency laser field with a sodium atom in traveling and standing light waves. It was found that the optical pressure forces due to a traveling wave were quite different for a two-level atom and an atom of sodium. In a standing wave field the motion of atoms was governed mainly by pulsed diffusion.

One-dimensional motion of slow atoms in a standing-wave field

Using an atomic beam we have experimentally observed the one-dimensional motion of atoms in a standing-wave field. The dependence of the laser-cooling effect on the saturation parameter has been measured, and the velocity bunching of atoms has been observed. The results have been compared with the two-level theory of a light-pressure force.

Cooling Atoms with Stimulated Emission

We have observed an efficient collimation of a cesium atomic beam crossing at right angles an intense laser standing wave. This new cooling scheme is mainly based on a stimulated redistribution of photons between the two counterpropagating waves by the moving atoms. By contrast with usual radiation pressure cooling, this "stimulated molasses" works for blue detuning and does not saturate at high intensity.
