Quantum Logic, Statistical Operator and the Problem of Measurement

Yutaka Toyozawa

An argument is presented that the consistent description of the evolution of a system is possible only with the statistical operator and not with the wave function. A reconstruction of the logic of quantum mechanics is proposed with the statistical operator as the basic quantity to describe the state in one-to-one correspondence. The problem of measurement is reconsidered in the light of this new logic. It is shown for the first time how the irreversible change in the measuring apparatus leads to the truncation of von Neumann's chain between the object and the subject.

Experimental characterization of the energetics of quantum logic gates

Valeria Cimini, Stefano Gherardini, Marco Barbieri +5 more

Abstract We characterize the energetic footprint of a two-qubit quantum gate from the perspective of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics. We experimentally reconstruct the statistics of energy and entropy fluctuations following the implementation of a controlled-unitary gate, linking them to the performance of the gate itself and the phenomenology of Landauer’s principle at the single-quantum level. Our work thus addresses the energetic cost of operating quantum circuits, a problem that is crucial for the grounding of the upcoming quantum technologies.
