Generation of motional Fock states of a trapped ion in the mediate-excitation regime

Abstract

We propose a scheme to prepare Fock states for the vibrational motion of a trapped ion. Unlike previous schemes, the present scheme works in the mediate-excitation regime, in which the corresponding Rabi frequency is equal to the trap frequency. Thus, the required time is greatly shortened, which is important in view of decoherence.

Scheme for direct measurement of the Wigner function of a trapped ion in the intermediate-excitation regime

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a scheme to directly measure the Wigner function for the motion of a trapped ion. Unlike the previous scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2547 (1997)], the present scheme works in the intermediate-excitation regime, which may be of experimental importance in view of decoherence. The scheme can also be used to perform a quantum nondemolition measurement of the vibrational energy and prepare motional Schr\"odinger cat states.

Fast Preparation of W States for Hot Trapped Ions

Shi-Biao Zheng

A scheme is presented for generating W states for three or four trapped ions in thermal motion. The scheme works in the regime, where the Rabi frequency of the laser field is on the order of the trap frequency, resulting a fast entanglement speed, which is of importance in view of decoherence.

Preparation of arbitrary pure states of two-dimensional motion of a trapped ion

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is proposed to generate an arbitrary entangled state of the two-dimensional vibrational motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme the ion is excited by a sequence of laser pulses tuned to the appropriate vibrational sidebands. In order to generate a pure state with upper phonon numbers M and N in the X and Y directions, respectively, we require no more than $(M+2)(N+1)$ operations.

Two Schemes for Generation of Entanglement for Vibronic Collective States of Multiple Trapped Ions

Wen‐Xing Yang, Jiahua Li, Anshou Zheng

We propose two schemes to prepare entanglement for the vibronic collective states of multiple trapped ions. The first scheme aims to generating multipartite entanglement for vibrational modes of trapped ions, which only requires a single laser beam tuned to the ionic carrier frequency. Our scheme works in the mediated excitation regime, in which the corresponding Rabi frequency is equal to the trap frequency. Beyond their fundamental importance, these states may be of interest for experimental studies on decoherence since the present scheme operates in a fast way. The second scheme aims to preparing the continuous variable multimode maximally Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state. The distinct advantage is that the operation time is only limited by the available laser intensity, not by the inherent mechanisms such as off-resonant excitations. This makes it promising to obtain entanglement of multiple coherent and squeezing states with desired amplitudes in a reasonable time.

Preparation of arbitrary finite superpositions of Fock states for the centre-of-mass motion of two trapped ions

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a scheme to drive the centre-of-mass vibrational motion of two trapped ions to an arbitrary finite superposition of Fock states from the vacuum state. In order to generate a superposition of N Fock states we need N operations. The scheme does not require differential laser addressing of individual ions.
