Observation of Zitterbewegung in a spin-orbit coupled atomic gas

Abstract

We show that the dynamics of an interacting atomic gas with light-induced gauge potential can be effectively described by a one-dimensional nonlinear spinor Dirac-type equation. Then, it is possible to observe atomic Zitterbewegung (ZB) with interatomic interaction. Here, the effect of two different kinds of nonlinear interaction, repulsive and attractive, on the ZB, is investigated numerically. Therefore, our proposal provides a more realistic situation in simulating the atomic ZB.

{\em Zitterbewegung} in Spin-Orbit Coupled Systems and Ehrenfest's Theorem

Debabrata Sinha, Jayanta K. Bhattacharjee

We use Ehrenfest's theorem to provide a particularly simple derivation of the {\em zitterbewegung} in the dynamics of initial Gaussian wave packets in a two-dimensional electron gas. For initial packets which are very wide in the $y$-direction, the {\em zitterbewegung} is only in the $y$-component of the velocity. We extend our Ehrenfest theorem based calculation to the spin-orbit coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to predict that there can be {\em zitterbewegung} in the $x$-component of the velocity in this situation driven by a combination of the nonlinear interaction in the condensate and the splitting due to the spin-orbit coupling.

Atomic Zitterbewegung

M. Merkl, Frank Zimmer, Gediminas Juzeliūnas +1 more

Ultracold atoms which are subject to ultra-relativistic dynamics are investigated. By using optically induced gauge potentials we show that the dynamics of the atoms is governed by a Dirac-type equation. To illustrate this we study the trembling motion of the centre of mass for an effective two-level system, historically called Zitterbewegung. Its origin is described in detail, where in particular the role of the finite width of the atomic wave packets is seen to induce a damping of both the centre of mass dynamics and the dynamics of the populations of the two levels.

Nonlinear quantum optics for spinor slow light

Julius Ruseckas, Viačeslav Kudriašov, Algirdas Mekys +3 more

We investigate quantum nonlinear effects at a level of individual quanta in a double-tripod atom-light coupling scheme involving two atomic Rydberg states. In such a scheme the slow light coherently coupled to strongly interacting Rydberg states represents a two-component or spinor light. The scheme provides additional possibilities for the control and manipulation of light quanta. A distinctive feature of the proposed setup is that it combines the spin-orbit coupling for the spinor slow light with an interaction between the photons, enabling generation of the second probe beam even when two-photon detuning is zero. Furthermore, the interaction between the photons can become repulsive if the one-photon detunings have opposite signs. This is different from a single-ladder atom-light coupling scheme in which the interaction between the photons is attractive for both positive and negative detunings as long as the Rabi frequency of the control beam is not too high.

Observing Zitterbewegung with Ultracold Atoms

J. Y. Vaishnav, Charles W. Clark

We propose an optical lattice scheme which would permit the experimental observation of Zitterbewegung (ZB) with ultracold, neutral atoms. A four-level tripod variant of the setup for stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) has previously been proposed for generating non-Abelian gauge fields. Dirac-like Hamiltonians, which exhibit ZB, are simple examples of such non-Abelian gauge fields; we show how a variety of them can arise, and how ZB can be observed, in a tripod system. We predict that the ZB should occur at experimentally accessible frequencies and amplitudes.

Nonlinear dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Yongping Zhang, Zhiqian Gui, Yuanyuan Chen

Single-particle dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate has recently been investigated in experiments that explore the physics of Landau-Zener tunneling and of the Zitterbewegung. In this paper, we study the influence of a nonlinearity due to interactions on these dynamics and show that the dispersion relation develops interesting loop structures. The atoms can move along the nonlinear dispersion curve in the presence of a weak acceleration force, and we show that the loops lead to straightforward nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling. However, we find that for the Zitterbewegung, induced by a sudden quench in the spin-orbit-coupling parameters, the nonlinear dispersion is irrelevant.

Zitterbewegungeffect in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 ultracold atoms

Yi‐Cai Zhang, Shu-Wei Song, Chaofei Liu +1 more

The Zitterbewegung effect in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 cold atoms is investigated in the presence of the Zeeman field and a harmonic trap. It is shown that the Zeeman field and the harmonic trap have significant effect on the Zitterbewegung oscillatory behaviors. The external Zeeman field could suppress or enhance the Zitterbewegung amplitude and change the frequencies of oscillation. A much slowly damping Zitterbewegung oscillation can be achieved by adjusting both the linear and the quadratic Zeeman fields. Multifrequency Zitterbewegung oscillation can be induced by the applied Zeeman field. In the presence of the harmonic trap, the subpackets corresponding to different eigenenergies would always keep coherent, resulting in the persistent Zitterbewegung oscillations. The Zitterbewegung oscillation would display very complicated and irregular oscillation characteristics due to the coexistence of different frequencies of the Zitterbewegung oscillation. Furthermore, numerical results show that the Zitterbewegung effect is robust even in the presence of interaction between atoms.
