Abstract

The basic operations of a Quantum Flux Parametron Circuit (QFP) are studied by means of computer simulation and fundamental experiments, and good agreement between experimental and simulation results is obtained. From these results, the basic operations of the QFP have been experimentally confirmed for the first time.

Quantum Flux Parametron

W. Hioe, Eiichi Goto

This book concerns a Josephson device for supercomputers which has extremely low heat dissipation (about 106 times less than semiconductor devices and 103 times less than voltage-based Josephson devices). In the previous book on Quantum Flux Parametrons (QFPs), DC Flux Parametron, the basic device operation are described. This book deals in much greater depth on the problems which are faced by the QFP. The device characteristics are worked out in detail showing clearly the analysis methods used. A new logic gate using the QFP is described with respect to its basic scheme, operation, and ways for forming logic circuits. The problems faced by the basic QFP are much reduced in the new logic gate. As the QFP operates near the Heisenberg and Boltzmann limits for computing devices, we also show the relationship between speed and stability. The book contains the latest analytical results on QFPs.The material presented in the book can be understood with very little mathematical training or knowledge about superconducting physics. It is also self-contained and does not require reading of other material. Most of the device characteristics can be reproduced from the equations given using simple programs. A circuit simulator is not needed except for high speeds when transient behavior becomes important.

Quantum flux parametron

Y. Harada, Eiichi Goto Eiichi Goto, N. Miyamoto

The Quantum Flux Parametron (QFP) is a new cryogenic switching device based on the parametron principle and Josephson technology. Due to the magnetic flux quantization in superconducting devices, the switching mechanism of the QFP is quite different from that of semiconductors. This presentation describes the device characteristics. QFPs have been fabricated using the Nb/Pb-alloy Josephson junction process, and their basic operation is evaluated. Over 20dB current gain is attained. One-half frequency-divider operation up to 1.8GHz has been successfully observed.

Noise analysis of the quantum flux parametron

H.L. Ko, G.S. Lee

An analysis of the limitations imposed by thermal noise on the application of the quantum flux parametrons (QFPs) as current comparators and timing discriminators is presented. At low operational frequencies, a thermal activation approach is used, while at high frequencies a circuit simulation method is required. At frequencies greater than the Josephson junction plasma frequency, an approximate expression for the noise is given. The calculations are in good agreement with the approximations and the experimental results.>

Fundamental characteristics of the QFP measured by the DC SQUID

Nobutaka Shimizu, Y. Harada, Naoko Miyamoto +2 more

The fundamental characteristics are described of the quantum flux parametron (QPF), measured by a method in which the output signals of the QFP are detected with a DC SQUID. The DC SQUID linearly and continuously converts the output current of the QFP to voltage, allowing the output signal of the QFP to be measured as the voltage of the DC SQUID. The fundamental characteristics of the QFP have been experimentally confirmed in detail.>

The aim of this work is to model the measurement of flux qubits using Quantum-Flux-Parametron (QFP) and to theoretically investigate and numerically simulate the fidelity of the measurement in different bases.
