Quantum Sufficiency in the Operator Algebra Framework

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the investigation of the notion of sufficiency in quantum statistics. Three kinds of this notion are considered: plain sufficiency (called simply: sufficiency), Petz’s sufficiency, and Umegaki’s sufficiency. The problem of the existence and structure of the minimal sufficient subalgebra is analyzed in some detail, conditions yielding equivalence of the three modes of sufficiency are considered, and quantum Basu’s theorem is obtained. Moreover, it is shown that an interesting “factorization theorem” of Jenčová and Petz needs some corrections to hold true.

Some aspects of quantum sufficiency for finite and full von Neumann algebras

Andrzej Łuczak

Abstract Some features of the notion of sufficiency in quantum statistics are investigated. Three kinds of this notion are considered: plain sufficiency (called simply: sufficiency), strong sufficiency and Umegaki’s sufficiency. It is shown that for a finite von Neumann algebra with a faithful family of normal states the minimal sufficient von Neumann subalgebra is sufficient in Umegaki’s sense. Moreover, a proper version of the factorization theorem of Jenčová and Petz is obtained. The structure of the minimal sufficient subalgebra is described in the case of pure states on the full algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space.

Quantum Sufficiency for Self-Adjoint Statistical Models via Likelihood-Type Operators on Real $*$-Subalgebras and Real Jordan Algebras

Koichi Yamagata

We develop a theory of quantum sufficiency on real *-subalgebras and real Jordan algebras for models consisting of general self-adjoint operators, including derivatives of states. Square-root likelihood ratios and symmetric logarithmic derivatives serve as self-adjoint likelihood-type objects, allowing ordinary quantum statistical models and local models to be treated within a unified framework that admits degenerate reference states. We introduce sufficient real unital positive maps and show that their Hermitian fixed points form a real Jordan algebra admitting a sufficient Jordan conditional expectation. The real and complex *-subalgebras generated by this algebra admit sufficient real and complex completely positive conditional expectations, respectively. We characterize the minimal sufficient real *-subalgebra by the likelihood-ratio set and $ρ$-modular invariance. The minimal sufficient real Jordan algebra is generated by the likelihood-ratio set together with the operator obtained by normalizing every irreducible diagonal block of the reference state, relative to the minimal sufficient real *-subalgebra, to trace one. We also obtain Koashi-Imoto type decompositions for real *-subalgebras and real Jordan algebras admitting sufficient conditional expectations, explicitly accounting for inequivalent irreducible Jordan representations. These results separate the likelihood-ratio aspect of sufficiency from its noncommutative modular aspect and identify real Jordan structure as a natural framework for quantum statistical sufficiency.

Minimal sufficient statistical experiments on von Neumann algebras

Yui Kuramochi

A statistical experiment on a von Neumann algebra is a parametrized family of normal states on the algebra. This paper introduces the concept of minimal sufficiency for statistical experiments in such operator algebraic situations. We define equivalence relations of statistical experiments indexed by a common parameter set by completely positive or Schwarz coarse-graining and show that any statistical experiment is equivalent to a minimal sufficient statistical experiment unique up to normal isomorphism of outcome algebras. We also establish the relationship between the minimal sufficiency condition for a statistical experiment in this paper and those for subalgebra. These concepts and results are applied to the concatenation relation for completely positive channels with general input and outcome von Neumann algebras. In the case of the quantum-classical channel corresponding to the positive-operator valued measure (POVM), we prove the equivalence of the minimal sufficient condition previously proposed by the author and that in this paper. We also give a characterization of the discreteness of a POVM up to postprocessing equivalence in terms of the corresponding quantum-classical channel.

Weakly sufficient quantum statistics

Katarzyna Lubnauer, Andrzej Łuczak, Hanna Podsȩdkowska

Abstract Some aspects of weak sufficiency of quantum statistics are investigated. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a weakly sufficient statistic for a given family of vector states, investigate the problem of its minimality, and find the relation between weak sufficiency and other notions of sufficiency employed so far.

Conditioning on Subalgebras - Entropy Duality and Generalized Quantum Stein's Lemma in von Neumann Algebras

Bjarne Bergh, Li Gao, Mizanur Rahaman

We establish duality relations for conditional entropies relative to subalgebras of arbitrary von Neumann algebras, including the Umegaki relative entropy as well as the sandwiched- and Petz-Rényi divergences. Even in finite dimensions, these results extend the familiar dualities for conditional entropies from tensor-product subsystems to general subalgebras, while also lifting the framework to the fully infinite-dimensional setting. As an application, we establish an infinite-dimensional extension of quantum Stein's lemma when the alternative hypothesis is the state space of a finite-index subalgebra, which gives an operational interpretation of the relative entropy to a subalgebra as the optimal asymptotic error exponent in composite quantum hypothesis testing-the first beyond finite dimensions.

State Determination and Sufficiency of Observables

Katarzyna Lubnauer, Hanna Podsȩdkowska

Informational completeness and the possibility of state distinction and determination are among the more important issues of quantum statistics. We use spectral and semispectral (POV) measures to analyse these questions. For a given W ∗-algebra and a family of normal states on it we investigate the relation between sufficiency in Petz’s sense of a W ∗-subalgebra generated by a spectral measure, and the possibility of determination of these states by means of an observable.
