Quantum statistics of polariton parametric interactions

M. Sassermann, Vörös, Zoltán, Mohsen Razavi +2 more

Using a high-quality GaAs planar microcavity, we optically generate polariton pairs, and verify their correlations by means of time-resolved single-photon detection. We find that correlations between the different modes are consistently lower than identical mode correlations, which is attributed to the presence of uncorrelated background. We discuss a model to quantify the effects of such a background on the observed correlations. Using spectral and temporal filtering, the background can be suppressed and a change in photon statistics towards non-classical correlations is observed. These results improve our understanding of the statistics of polariton-polariton scattering and background mechanisms, and pave the way to the generation of entangled polariton pairs.

Dissipation and detection of polaritons in the ultrastrong-coupling regime

Motoaki Bamba, Tetsuo Ogawa

We have investigated theoretically a dissipative polariton system in the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime without using the rotating-wave approximation on system-reservoir coupling. Photons in a cavity and excitations in matter respectively couple two large ensembles of harmonic oscillators (photonic and excitonic reservoirs). Inheriting the quantum statistics of polaritons in the ultrastrong coupling regime, in the ground state of the whole system, the two reservoirs are not in the vacuum states but they are squeezed and correlated. We presume the reservoirs to be in this nonvacuum state in the master equation and in the input-output formalism with Langevin equations. Both approaches consistently guarantee the decay of the polariton system to its ground state; no photon detection is also obtained when the polariton system is in the ground state.

Sub-Poissonian Statistics of Rydberg-Interacting Dark-State Polaritons

C. S. Hofmann, G. Günter, H. Schempp +5 more

We observe individual dark-state polaritons as they propagate through an ultracold atomic gas involving Rydberg states coupled via an electromagnetically induced transparency resonance. Strong long-range interactions between Rydberg excitations give rise to a blockade between polaritons, resulting in large optical nonlinearities and modified polariton number statistics. By combining optical imaging and high-fidelity detection of the Rydberg polaritons we investigate both aspects of this coupled atom-light system. We map out the full nonlinear optical response as a function of atomic density and follow the temporal evolution of polaritons through the atomic cloud. In the blockade regime, the statistical fluctuations of the polariton number drop well below the quantum noise limit. The low level of fluctuations indicates that photon correlations modified by the strong interactions have a significant backaction on the Rydberg atom statistics.
