Abstract

In a triple semiconductor quantum well structure coupled by two external fields, we investigate the influence of atomic coherence induced by external fields and decay interference on the absorption and dispersion of a weak pulsed light, and slow light can be achieved in this system. Quantum well structure behaves as "artificial atom" and its advantage of easy integration makes it has some practical applications.

Slow and fast light propagation in a triple quantum well nanostructure

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the absorption and dispersion properties of a weak probe field in a triple quantum well nanostructure by using the incoherent pumping fields. A deep 7.1 nm-thick GaAs well is coupled, on one side, to two shallow 6.8 nm-thick Al 0.2 Ga 0.8 As wells by a 2.5 nm-thick Al 0.4 Ga 0.6 As barrier. The two shallow wells are separated by a 2.0 nm-thick Al 0.4 Ga 0.8 As barrier. Both sides of quantum well contact with 36 nm Al 0.4 Ga 0.6 As. Therefore, this type of triple quantum well nanostructure can be used as a suitable medium for studying the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) and interference between incoherent pumping fields on absorption and dispersion properties of weak probe light. We find that the interferences from spontaneous emission and incoherent pumping processes can change the slope of dispersion and group velocity of the probe light from slow to fast or vice versa. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the group velocity of the light pulse can be controlled with the rates of incoherent pumping fields.

Absorption and slow light effect of pulsed light in a triple semiconductor quantum well

Zhonghua Huang, Ai-Xi Chen, Zhao-Chu Chen +1 more

Under the condition of two different cases, the absorption of a pulsed probe field and its slow propagation in a triple semiconductor quantum well are investigated. The result shows that semiconductor medium becomes transparent due to the action of control field. Another result shows that by choosing appropriate physical parameters, the slow propagation of the input field can be achieved. The proposed scheme has some potential applications and may lead to the development of the controlled technique of optical buffers and optical delay lines.

Influences of control coherence and decay coherence on optical bistability in a semiconductor quantum well

AI Jian-feng, Ai-Xi Chen, Li Deng

We discuss the influences of two different types of mechanisms of quantum coherence on optical bistability in a semiconductor quantum well structure. In the first mechanism, only quantum coherence induced by the resonant coupling of a strong control laser is considered. In the second mechanism, the decay coherence is taken into account under the condition where the control field is weak. In two different cases, optical bistability can be obtained through choosing appropriate physical parameters. Our studies show quantum coherence makes the optical nonlinear effect of the system become stronger, which takes an important role in the process of generating optical bistability. A semiconductor quantum well with flexibility and easy integration in design could potentially be exploited in real solid-state devices.

Matched slow optical soliton pairs via biexciton coherence in quantum dots

Wen‐Xing Yang, Ai-Xi Chen, Ray‐Kuang Lee +1 more

We theoretically investigate the simultaneous formation and stable propagation of slow optical soliton pairs in semiconductor quantum dots with a four-level biexciton-exciton cascade configuration. Owing to the destructive interference set up by two continuous wave control fields that couple to a biexciton state, the linear as well as nonlinear dispersion can be dramatically enhanced simultaneously with the absorptions of two weak probe fields being almost suppressed. These results reveal that the detrimental distortions of the two weak-pulsed probe fields due to dispersion effects can be well balanced by the self-phase modulation effect under very low input light intensity, which leads to the slow temporal optical soliton pairs with matched group velocity and amplitude. We also show that the propagation of slow optical solitons can be strongly modified by the biexciton coherence.

Controlling a group velocity of light by magnetic field

We have shown that quantum interference in a driven quasi-degenerate two-level atomic system can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field. We demonstrate that the mechanism of optical control is based on quantum interference, which allows one to implement both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in one atomic system. Dispersion of such the medium allows one to control group velocity of propagation of light pulses be ultra-slow or superluminal via applied magnetic field.

Spontaneously generated coherence induced transparency in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well

Ai-Xi Chen, Chen Yuan, Li Deng +1 more

Properties of transmission of a weak pulsed light in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well are investigated. Under the condition of same physical parameters, we research absorption and chromatic dispersion of pulsed light via changing the cross coupling term resulting from the spontaneously generated coherence effect in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well. It turns out that the absorption of quantum well medium is continually decreasing with the enhancement of spontaneously generated coherence effect. Simultaneously, strong chromatic dispersion turns into transparent window.
