Magnetic field rotation of a strong resonance radiation polarization plane in the media with Doppler-broadened transitions of 01 and 10 types

Abstract

For atomic media with resonant Doppler-broadened transitions of J=0 to J'=1 or J=1 to J'=0 type and taking into account the relaxation due to depolarizing collisions a theory of nonlinear magneto-optic polarization phenomena is developed. The theory is valid in the case of both arbitrary resonance linearly-polarized radiation intensity and arbitrary external magnetic field spatial orientation. The Faraday and Voigt geometries are analysed in detail, and in the case of the Faraday geometry the effect is considered of a noncompensated magnetic field transverse component on the shape of a dependence relating the radiation polarization plane rotation angle to a magnetic field longitudinal component. In the case of the Voigt geometry an essential effect is found of the angle between the radiation initial polarization and transverse magnetic field vectors on the character of the dependence relating the radiation polarization plane rotation angle to the transverse magnetic field magnitude.

Modification of a strong resonance radiation polarization in media with Doppler-broadened transitions of 0 to 1 and 1 to 0 types and in the presence of a DC electric field

Sergey V. Fomichev

For atomic media with resonant Doppler-broadened transitions of J=0 to J'=1 or J=1 to J'=0 type and taking into account the relaxation due to depolarizing collisions, a theory of non-linear optical polarization phenomena in the presence of a DC electric field is developed. The theory is valid in the case of both arbitrary resonance radiation intensity and arbitrary external DC electric field spatial orientation. The intensity-dependent contributions to variation of radiation polarization are analysed in detail in the Doppler limit. Special attention is paid to the case of linear polarization of incident radiation; in this case as well as in the presence of a DC electric field, the Doppler-enhanced non-linear optical contributions determining the emerging ellipticity and the rotation angle of polarization, respectively, are of the same order of magnitude (unlike the case of external magnetic field, in which the key effect is the rotation of polarization). It is shown, however, that in the case of the strictly transverse geometry and if the angle between the electric field direction and the initial polarization vector is equal to 45 degrees , the Doppler-enhanced non-linear optical contribution to the rotation angle becomes anomalously small. The effect of the presence of a longitudinal component of electric field on the non-linear optical polarization phenomena is investigated. In addition, although in the case of a purely longitudinal geometry for the considered transitions the electric field effect on radiation polarization modification is absent, some analytic results concerning self-rotation and deformation of a polarization ellipse in the Doppler limit for an intense initially elliptically polarized radiation are also presented.

Time-dependent resonant magneto-optical rotation

D. Dziczek

Results of a fairly straightforward experiment on resonant magneto-optical rotation by rubidium-87 atoms revealed strong time-dependence of the polarization plane of light emerging from atomic vapors following a sudden irradiation with a laser beam. The rotation of the plane appears as a not direct consequence of the influence of the magnetic field on atoms. Reported measurements conducted using a vapor cell without any buffer gas or an anti-relaxation wall coating show that transmitted light has initially the same (linear) polarization as the incident one. Rotation of the polarization plane caused by an axial magnetic field develops in time scales similar to the pace of establishing the optical pumping/relaxation equilibrium in the atomic ensemble. The traditional passive Faraday rotation picture providing working description for the resonant magneto-optical effects in steady-state conditions does not explain the observed sequence of evolution of the polarization. The picture has to be augmented with analysis of time dependence in the spatial distribution of relevant quantum states within the atomic ensemble as well as longitudinal and transversal intensity profiles of the light beam. Isolation of external effects caused by the optical pumping and relaxation processes from consequences of internal atomic coherences should uncover more details of mechanisms of the latter in the presence of magnetic field. Plentitude of data available from time-dependent polarization measurements provides strong incentives for further development and tests of comprehensive models of coherent interactions of atomic ensembles with radiation and possibly a base for additional advance in understanding and applications of these phenomena.

Dispersion of rotation of polarization plane and circular dichroism for alkaline atoms in intense radiation fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

The method of computer simulations on nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects developed for real multi-level atoms in the two laser fields of arbitrary intensity and external magnetic field is applied for the polarization effects of different types calculations and investigations of the dependence of the characteristics of these effects on magnetic field strength, intensities, polarizations and detunings of laser fields for alkaline atoms. The essence of the method consists in simulations and analysis of the plots of dependence of quasienergies on parameters (detunings and intensities of radiation fields, magnetic field strength), which are obtained with the help of sorting subprogram, and selection of suitable algorithms for calculations of characteristics of nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects. One-photon and two photon resonant effects are investigated for wide range of magnetic field strength from Zeeman to Paschen Back effects. Some new features in the spectra of rotation of plane of polarization and circular dicohroizm of different types are predicted. The results show the agreement with known experiments. Such calculations of nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects in the intense laser fields resonant to adjacent transitions and magnetic field show the opportunity of investigation the modifications of electronic structure due to intense radiation fields and strong external magnetic field in atomic gases and also may be used for the treatment of new methods of phase-polarization selection of modes of tunable lasers.

Resonant magneto-optical rotation: new twists in an old plot

Dmitry Budker

Nonlinear in laser power, near-resonant light-atom interaction leads to a number of spectacular modifications of a well-known effect -polarization plane rotation in a magnetic field applied along the direction of light propagation. In particular, the rotation can be enhanced by up to nine orders of magnitude compared to the linear case.Faraday effect [ 1 ] is the rotation of the plane of linear light polarization by a medium in a magnetic field applied in the direction of light propagation. In 1898, Macaluso and Corbino eJ, studying absorption spectra of the alkali atoms in the presence of magnetic fields, discovered that the Faraday effect in the vicinity of resonance absorption lines also had a distinct resonant character. The essence of the Macaluso-Corbino effect can be illustrated by considering a simple case of a F= 1 ~ F'=O transition (Fig. 1 ).Linearly polarized light incident on the sample can be resolved into two counter-rotating circular components ( cr~.In the absence of a magnetic field, the M=±l sublevels are degenerate and the optical resonance

Magneto-optical rotation in atomic transitions between levels with J=0 and J=1

F. Schuller, Derek N. Stacey

We give a density-matrix account of an atom in a dilute vapor which is subject to a magnetic field and through which is propagating plane-polarized monochromatic light with frequency in the vicinity of a transition between levels of total angular momenta $J=0$ and 1, where the degeneracy may be in either the upper or lower level. The master equation approach allows saturation effects to be treated in a nonperturbative manner, and collisions are included within the context of the impact approximation. The particular case of the Voigt effect in a $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}0)$ transition (lower level $J=1$) is considered in detail, and contrasted with that in $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{0}1),$ already published; in the absence of collisions, the $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}0)$ rotation spectrum is of Lorentzian form at all intensities, while if collisional relaxation is much faster than radiative decay, it takes the same form as for the $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{0}1)$ case. The rotation produced by a magnetic field of arbitrary direction and the effects of atomic motion are also discussed.

Magneto-optic rotation for an arbitrary field direction

N. H. Edwards, S J Phipp, P. E. G. Baird

We give a theory of magneto-optic rotation and pseudorotation spectra for forbidden transitions. The case considered is that of a weak magnetic field at an arbitrary angle to the direction of light of low intensity passing through a dilate atomic vapour. The theory is applied to the 1279 nm M1 transition in atomic lead and the 1283 nm M1/E2 transition in atomic thallium. Experimental Voigt and Faraday effect data for lead measured in a sensitive optical polarimeter provide confirmation of the predicted profiles.
