Interference effects in the degenerate-wave-mixing spectroscopy of alexandrite

T. Catunda, Luiz A. O. Nunes

The degenerate-multiwave-mixing spectroscopy of alexandrite at 77 K using a pulsed dye laser in resonance with the ${\mathit{R}}_{1\mathit{m}}$ line was studied in this work. Unusual asymmetric line shapes that can be explained by an interference effect between resonant and nonresonant contributions of the media susceptibility were observed. The resonant effect is caused by the saturation of the two-level system susceptibility and the nonresonant contribution comes from the linear polarizability difference between excited and ground states. The present work shows an observation of this kind of interference phenomena in degenerate-wave-mixing experiments. Furthermore, we note that it is an observation of saturation line splitting in degenerate wave mixing in a narrow line in solids.

Coherent Control In Ultrafast Photon Echo Spectroscopy: Liouville-Space Pathways Interference

Maxim S. Pshenichnikov, Wim P. de Boeij, Douwe A. Wiersma

Dephasing-induced resonances, arising from interference between different excitation pathways, are well-known in frequency-domain spectroscopy.[1] It is generally thought that the time-domain analog of this phenomena is difficult to achieve due to the explicit time ordering of the interaction fields.[2,3] In this contribution we report on the observation of time-domain interference in phase-locked stimulated photon echo. We also show how complete control over the interference effect can be exercised.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with noisy lasers

Yanhong Xiao, Tun Wang, Masha Baryakhtar +8 more

We demonstrate and characterize two coherent phenomena that can mitigate the effects of laser phase noise for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT): a laser-power-broadening-resistant resonance in the transmitted intensity cross correlation between EIT optical fields, and a resonant suppression of the conversion of laser phase noise to intensity noise when one-photon noise dominates over two-photon-detuning noise. Our experimental observations are in good agreement with both an intuitive physical picture and numerical calculations. The results have wide-ranging applications to spectroscopy, atomic clocks, and magnetometers.
