For a wide range of electron filling we study the spin density wave states in the Hubbard model on a square lattice within a Hartree-Fock approximation. It is shown that the incommensurate helical spin density wave states appear for whole region of the electron filling and, especially, that the commensurate helical spin density wave state with wave vector (π, 0) is stable near the quarter-filling. We examine also the relative stability of the soliton and the vortex lattice states to the helical spin density wave states and obtain the results that near the half-filling case the soliton lattice states are stable states for intermediate interaction strength and that the vortex lattice states do not appear as the stable state, except one particular state with the wind-mill spin structure at the quarter-filling.
The Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice is studied within the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. A wide variety of solutions are found, as a function of filling and value of the Coulomb repulsion. Their properties range from those of magnetic polarons to a behavior similar to electrons in an external magnetic field (flux phases). The main features of the vortex solution are studied. It is shown that its energy increases logarithmically with system size, and that it becomes more stable for high values of the Coulomb repulsion and doping levels. Also, multivortex configurations are shown to exist. The implications of our results in the qualitative behavior of the Hubbard model as function of doping and strength of the interaction are discussed.
Spatially modulated magnetic phases are investigated within the mean field theory for an itinerant electron model, i.e. the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice. By numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian for finite-size systems under a periodic boundary condition, we examine relative stability and physical properties of several possible magnetic states. When the electron fillings are nearly half-full, the diagonally or vertically modulated spin density wave (SDW) state is stabilized over the uniform antiferromagnetic state and a crossover from the vertical to the diagonal states appears. The diagonal or vertical stripe state is characterized by the presence of the midgap band due to the soliton lattice formation inside the main SDW gap, being an insulator. The wave length λ SDW is linearly proportional to the excess carrier concentration. Excess carriers are accommodated in the form of the soliton lattice, forming a charge density wave whose wave length is λ SDW /2.
We present an unbiased mean-field analysis of magnetic and charge orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice, at both zero and finite temperatures. Unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on large finite lattices are complemented by solutions restricted to N\'eel and circular spiral order in the thermodynamic limit. The magnetic states are classified by a systematic scheme based on the dominant Fourier components of the spin texture. On finite lattices a whole zoo of ordering patterns appears. We show that many of these states are finite-size artifacts related to the limited choice of ordering wave vectors on a finite lattice. In the thermodynamic limit only three classes of states with a relatively simple structure survive: N\'eel, circular spiral, and stripe states. Stripes involve also charge order and can be unidirectional or bidirectional, with horizontal and/or vertical orientation. We present complete phase diagrams in the plane spanned by electron density and temperature, for a moderate Hubbard interaction and various choices of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude.
Several new classes of compounds can be modeled in first approximation by electrons on the triangular lattice that interact through on-site repulsion
U as well as nearest-neighbor repulsion
V. This extended Hubbard model on a triangular lattice has been studied mostly in the strong coupling limit for only a few types of instabilities. Using the extended two-particle self-consistent approach (ETPSC), that is valid at weak to intermediate coupling, we present an unbiased study of the density and interaction dependent crossover diagram for spin- and charge-density wave instabilities of the normal state at arbitrary wave vector. When
U dominates over
V and electron filling is large, instabilities are chiefly in the spin sector and are controlled mostly by Fermi surface properties. Increasing
V eventually leads to charge instabilities. In the latter case, it is mostly the wave vector dependence of the vertex that determines the wave vector of the instability rather than Fermi surface properties. At small filling, nontrivial instabilities appear only beyond the weak coupling limit. There again, charge-density wave instabilities are favored over a wide range of dopings by large
V at wave vectors corresponding to $\sqrt{(3)}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{(3)}$ superlattice in real space. Commensurate fillings do not play a special role for this instability. Increasing
U leads to competition with ferromagnetism. At negative values of
U or
V, neglecting superconducting fluctuations, one finds that charge instabilities are favored. In general, the crossover diagram presents a rich variety of instabilities. We also show that thermal charge-density wave fluctuations in the renormalized-classical regime can open a pseudogap in the single-particle spectral weight, just as spin or superconducting fluctuations.
Using a path-integral formalism and decomposing the Hubbard interaction into charge and spin order parameters, we develop a 1/S loop expansion of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. At the saddle-point level, we present a detailed study of the energetics of twisted antiferromagnetic order. Doping the antiferromagnetic state leads to a rich mean-field phase diagram at zero temperature, which includes spiral phases, a column phase, and ferromagnetism. The on-site magnetization, the density of states, the plasma frequency, and the quasiparticle weights are evaluated for the twisted spin-density-wave (SDW) states as a function of doping and U/t. Doping-induced frustration remarkably leads to a closure of the Mott-Hubbard band gap for any U/t. At one-loop order, we delineate the collective spin and charge fluctuations of the mean-field SDW state. The action for the two transverse spin modes at half-filling maps to a nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma} model, which tends to disorder upon doping. Twisted magnetic ground states exhibit a third Goldstone mode due to the complete breaking of rotational invariance. For the commensurate SDW, the charge fluctuations couple only to longitudinal spin fluctuations, whereas, for the incommensurate metallic SDW states, the charge modes are coupled nontrivially to the massless spin waves. This suggests a metallic state quite unlike traditional Fermi liquids.
